When you are doing your build and you are doing your galley.... what rules do you follow.

When you build yours how long did it take for you to make a final draft?

Please offer sites and suggestions for those who are starting a new build or have shelves now and want to finish the design.

For my 2 cents, I recommend designing your galley around what you intend to bring. If you know the stove, oven, cooler, bins, boxes.... that you intend to carry, then you make a place for everything that wastes the least amount of space.
Option 2, it just make a few large spaces and wing it until you figure it out, and then make the nice galley ( where I'm at)

Our galley is designed for short trips.
One or two nights is about us these days so the galley is minimal.
Stowage under galley bench.

We learned from the first one and Nancy designed this one.

I think the Danny has the best approach to it. It's the only way to really think things through and make sure that you only have to do it once. For me...I position the large items, cooler and where I want the stove...then build around those items. Things like lots of drawers only add more weight,time, and effort which means $$. All this kind of depends on your type of galley. Is it a full to the floor thing, or only a half way to the floor thing? I like the full to the floor type galley.

If it were me, I'd try to do larger drawers with dividers in them for your cooking items. For the upper portion...just doors, but behind them...it's all open and not divided off. Under the stove...a pantry with all the pots and pans. Just my opinion. Doug

I designed my galley in my head, made a few 'paper dolls' and then built it. Tanya is happy with the way it turned out and that's what counts. No changes are planned.



Although I did repaint the ice box.

When I was planning the trailer... I wanted cabinets, pullout stove, cooler space, ?microwave?, running water, and formica countertop. What I ended up with is not considered a "galley" anymore, to quote KCStudly in another thread of mine

He was quite accurate, my galley is a galley in name only. Other priorities changed it to a storage area, with only the stove being stored there, and the "running water" only if the spigot is opened on the water jug (or if the A/C drips).http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=54945&p=1018905#p1018905 I only had so much space in the squarebacked 4x8 to work with. I don't know if I would've really re-prioritized it, since it is just now finished, and un-tested. But now I know why larger footprints are popular...you can squeeze in a real galley!

I only needed a very simple galley due to our planned use of the teardrop, which is more about traveling and other activities and less about "camping and cooking." Not that I have anything against camping and cooking, but I am not an elaborate cook at home either. Some meat on the grill and a nice salad or some steamed veggies and we are happy. We'll do our best to keep up at the gatherings, but we wouldn't do all that if it is just the two of us.

I did what Doug said, I picked my cooler and set it where it was supposed to go, determined what a comfortable height was for me to have the counter, and went from there. My storage is a big open space, now filled with everything I could reasonably need, neatly organized in plastic bins. We have plenty of room in our truck for an extra cooler or a collection of cast iron should we decide we want one in the future, and our extension table gives me plenty of counter space to work. Compared to some of the boats I have cooked in, it is absolutely elaborate.

For our needs K.I.S.S. works best and I am very happy with what I built. I've been sitting here for the past few minutes staring at this screen and trying to decide what I would do differently in the galley if I were doing it over and I couldn't think of a single thing. Huh, how about that..........



I'll stick in a couple more pictures later of the inside of the cabinets, but it's nothing exciting.

I just thought mine up in my head and built it as I went along. No plans, no templates. Kinda like the rest of my tear...

You have a very nice galley, Debbie. It was obviously built for a woman who likes to cook!!

There is always something that you would/could change...
I changed mine as I built and do like the final result. I am able to cook my food, carry what I need and "look" cool doing it...in my eyes anyway.
I think that is what it is all about...enjoy as you build and as you camp.
