What do you do for a spare tire for your teardrop?

Postby Steve_Cox » Mon Jan 23, 2006 10:24 pm

I have been trying to decide what to do for a spare tire. (not mine, the tear drop) So many choices. Since my tires are new and will likely not get too many miles on them, I was thinking of a tire plugging kit and my 12 volt compressor would do, since they are always in the car anyway. Seems the last 15 years or so, if I get a punctured tire, I usually fix it on the car or truck with the plugger, if it was possible. Haven't had a blow out since the younger days running tires with the wires or cords hanging out.

My wheels (bolt pattern) matchs but I've got a donut with both the chevy and ford patterns (same wheel) that I will be carrying in the future. My boat trailer has a GM hole pattern.

Have a good day.

I plan on carring a spar Harbor Freight trailer wheel and tire in the back of the Jeep or my c-10. Which ever is toting it.

I've got 5 trailers...4 of them will take the same bolt pattern...I just carry a spare that will work....not the same size for the tears spare is 14" tears are 15"...but it'll get me to a station or tire dealer to get the regular one repaired....I just keep the tire in the truck whenever towing...same thing for the battery...1 Marine battery that I just plop into whichever boat or tear I want to take....just what I do....Doug

I carry a plugging kit, a can of fix-a-flat, and a short coil of air hose with a chuck on each end.
This allows me to "borrow" air from one of my other tires, or from a passerby that offers.

I don't carry a spare for the teardrop. In 22 years of towin' em, I've never had a flat or tire failure (even on the used tires I put on our first teardrop!). The secret seems to be getting quality tires, staying within their load rating, and keeping an eye on treadwear and not letting that tread get too thin. Of coourse, I don't usually take my teardrops the same places a certain desert rat friend of mine does, but if I recall correctly, HE'S never had a flat either. Maybe we're just lucky ...

I don't carry a spare. My tires are five years old now and still look new. I just don't worry about getting a flat.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

Haven't aquired a spare as of yet but do hace a heavy chain loop welded to the back of the front cross member so we can use a "hook" bolt to hang a spare tire from

Now Grant you know if he had a flat, he would probably just call AAA and try and tell them which dirt road he was on. And besides none of us would probably never hear of it.

Have a good day.

I choose to travel light and carry a plugging kit and a can of flat fix to re-inflate. I'd thought about using my Dodge spare with six hole bolt pattern when building the tear but the large tires wouldn't have fit inside the teardrop fender wells.
