Thin galvanized sheeting for skin?

Postby MatBirch » Sat Mar 16, 2019 12:28 pm

Looking at some cool options and ideas as I get started on my trailer. My wife and I have always loved the distressed look of patina’d galvanized steel. In a quick search, it’s easy to find roof flashing in 20” width rolls. I could cover the joints with strips of just about anything. I was thinking of polished 1/8” aluminum, controlling the galvanic corrosion of dissimilar metals by installing them with VHB tape. I’d seal the butt joints in the sheeting first with p/u caulk.
We’d patina the galvi with mild acids, rust it up a little, and then clear coat it.
I’m only envisioning this on the top/front. Probably paint the sides in her favorite turquoise and brown combo. 8)

If you want nearly 'invisible' seams, you could seal the joints from the inside with 3M VHB (Very High Bonding) tape or another brand that is used for trailer skylights. The 3M products have withstood 10 years total immersion in water.

You should be able to find 4X8 sheets of 32 gauge galvanized sheets at any HVAC supply house. If you live in a bigger metro area 5X10's shouldn't be a problem.

One of the metal supply stores by me has a display for their acid etch and dyes for metal and the turquoise one jumps out at me. I like it a lot, some day I will have time to mess with some to see how it works. Not sure I would want a distressed camper unless I was pulling it with a "Rat Ride" But that's just me.

Corten might be an option if you want rusty. That is a big look that I like in the South West.

I am currently building an expedition trailer using flat "coil" sheets of 26 ga (0.48mm) metal roofing as skin material over a box built of 3/4 inch plywood. The sheets come 41.5 inches wide by 10 feet long. They are coated with Ceramastar 1050 which is an SMP (silicone modified polyester) coating. Tough stuff to say the least. $38 per sheet was a great buy! I haven't posted my build here because i didn't see where it would fit but one could find it on expedition portal.

I don't see it there. I tried a search using "Ceramastar" and drew a blank.
