been searching online for 1/8" Luan and only thing I find in 4 x 6 sheets are tempered hardboard.HD #83277 at $7.97 each.
Big question is will glue stick to the tempered smooth side??
plan is to build my walls using 2 x 2 spars w/ 1 1/2 foam sandwich then decorative paneling on inside. Cover the outside using Dacron fabric then painting with primer and paint.
My concern is do I need to roughen up the smooth surface or ??

1/4 (6mm) luan is lighted( I think) and stronger. Yes, luan is not great but is a lot better than pressed paper(Hardboard).

I'd be afraid that if you ended up with a leak, that stuff would come apart. (I don't have much experience with it though.)

Call up your lumber yards and ask if they can order sheets of 1/8" Baltic birch. They're probably 5' x 5' and about .... $15 or so. Home Depot contracts to buy the cheapest stuff that they can purchase in bulk.

calling around I found some 1/8" underlayment plywood w/ exterior glue for $16 per sheet. The 1/4 inch is $$21.82 per sheet.
But first I need to coat or paint the frame underside. Hopefully get my walls built this week??

It took me a while, but I found a two places that sold 1/8 birch ply. One 30 min away, the second 1.5 hrs away. Both are legit lumber yards and both had several options in 1/8 thickness. Worse case you should be able to find a place that sells in 3x8 door skin sizes

Tempered hardboard is very dense. Don't try to drive a brad into them with an air driver! Many of them will redirect into the air. I know from first hand experience. You would need to drill each hole if you are anchoring with a screw/nail. I don't have experience gluing this stuff. If you drive a screw without a pilot the t hardboard will split.

I would use 1/8" plywood. I got mine at large lumber yard on North Minneapolis. $9 a sheet. Couldn't tell you what it is, but they assured me it was exterior glued. I tested a piece before I used it. 2 plus years interior ceiling. Not a problem!

You shouldn't use Masonite. That's out of the way, they made millions of trailers out of it. They sided millions and millions of houses with it and still make doors with it. You should hold out for the good stuff but Masonite is OK if you keep it painted, That is not to say at any level it is good. Make sure you use 2 sided tempered Masonite, but the price is about the same as plywood. So use plywood.
