Painting over PMF?

Postby Sanuk.Sanan » Mon Sep 16, 2019 12:25 pm

Hi again,

I'm considering painting over my teardrop so it matches my car. Is it possible to paint over PMF? If so, what kind of paint would you recommend? external, industrial, auto?

Thanks again for your help!

PMF is typically painted with latex house paint.

I'm in the process of doing just that, painting my PMF (canvas). As far as matching your TV color, that's going to be using samples and matching as close as possible. Ya, that's what I tried.. Seems that you can get a solvent based paint easily to match, yet turning that to a water based is difficult (as I have so learned).

I'm not certain how a solvent based paint would react of TB2. I used a quality water based primer to attach my canvas (PMF). That means stay water based for me for best results. As means using chip samples to get close.

Another approach is to go to a Automotive Paint supply and see if you can get a sample chip. My TV is too old and they don't carry chips for it anymore. This would give you a way to get a custom mix that would be very close.

Curious, have you already bought your canvas and attached?

Hi There RJ,

My canvas is already attached and probably has been for 10 years.

Sorry, you're having such a difficult time. I have a newer Subaru Forester and so I've been researching hex color codes for it. I'm thinking I might be able to go to Home Depot or Lowes and have them custom mix it to the hex code. This was my thinking anyway. I'll let you know how it works.

Get a range of small quanity mix samples and test. Final color after drying, a bit of weathering will vary a lot, that way you can "dial it in"

Places like Lowe's or home Depot can match if you can bring in a sample of your car paint. The gas cap door can often be removed without too much drama and used as your sample.

You can also buy small bottles of touch up paint to match your car and can paint a sample with that.

Thank you! This is perfect. I have some touch-up paint I can use to create a "chip"
