A question for Aussies:
I've used Bondall Monocell Satin Marine Varnish (Polyurethane) to seal all surfaces as I go.
Anysuggestions for Aussie primers and top coats?

I directed this to Aussies orginally. I figured there was not much point asking the mainly American membership about their paint preferences when I was unlikely to find too many US brands here. No Gripper for instance.
However, I have since done some research on primers and it looks like some products supplied by Rustoleum Australia would be good.
I remembered the local paint store has quite a range of Rustoleum pains, so I went there this morning and found they have some of the Zinsser range of prep coats (these come via Rustoleum Australia).
I explained to the guy that I had really soaked my timber with polyurethane, and that it wasn't laziness making me reluctant to sand, rather that I really would prefer not to so as have more confidence in the seal on the timber.
So we looked at the primers on offer.

The Smart Prime datasheet says it has excellent adhesion to enamel paints and varnishes.

The Bulls-eye 1-2-3 looks OK too. Both say to not use on decks, areas subject to immersion or in prolonged contact with water.

The Bulls-eye 1-2-3 datasheets says it "provides excellent adhesion to dense glossy surfaces, enamel paints and varnishes, panelling, laminates and ceramics without sanding or deglossing."
I find that statement very appealing :)
Just requiring a wash and degrease floats my boat.
Datasheet also says it's suitable for any topcoat.

Has anyone used it? Had problems with it, etc?

They are all $50 per litre or $105 per US gallon.
I figured 1 litre won't be enough so a gallon can is the go.
Sounds expensive, but its local convenience (could save $18 buying at Bunnings in Adelaide, but that's a long way away), and ordinary house primer runs $70 per gallon.

Thoughts anyone?

Well, seems no one has any thoughts?
Never mind.
I canvassed several Australian paint suppliers' technical advice departments.
Most simply said "Nah, mate, you'll have to remove the polyurethane before you can paint."
They didn't quite get the point, eh?
Or they simply waffled about their products not being tested on that surface and couldn't therefore make a recommendation.....

So I got onto the Rustoleum Australia website and filled out their contact form.
"plywood that has been sealed with marine grade polyurethane, don't want to compromise the water resistance by sanding, reckon Bulls-eye 123 would work?"

Came to work next day to find emails from 2 different people..
"Don't use the bulls-eye 123 or the smart prime, Zinsser Cover Stain is the one you want for that application".
"We recommend cover stain for painting over polyurethane varnish".

No ifs, buts or maybes - just "use this one"
Kinda confidence inspiring.
And its oil based, which I think is good.

I am considering using a fine grade stainess steel wool to give it a light clean before priming, but almost certainly will us Zinsser Cover Stain.

Scratch up the poly with some sandpaper and use a good oil based primer.

Ah, but that is what the whole thing has been about - which of the bazillions out there is a good one?
And there will be no scratching of the poly now that I have found one the suppliers says will work without sanding.

Sorry I was no use on this one as I kept the varnish as my finish. Sounds like you have got a good one in the end. Happy painting!
