sealing windows

Postby MudFlap » Tue Sep 01, 2020 6:27 pm

Getting ready to wrap up the outside of camper!

Next question is about sealing windows.

What do you recommend to put under the outside window flange? The camper door I bought came with 1/8" x 1" foam applied to the inside of its flange. I'm thinking about doing the same on windows for ease of removal, should that be desired.

Of course rolling out some butyl rope caulk is the old standby, but I've done my share of cursing at trim, windows, etc sealed up with that stuff!

Once that is done, what kind of caulk to finish the job?

Camper is marine paint over fiberglass.

I used sikaflex 252 under the flanges of my doors.

I like it because:
Easy to find at the shops
It is paintable (so the label says, I'm about to find out ;) )
Its sandable "
High bond strength designed for areas subject to dynamic forces
Flexible
And being polyurethane, it doesn't shrink like acrylic water based sealers.

Disclaimer: I've never used it before - no idea about durability, but if it doesn't work, I'm in strife.
It is under my hurricane hinge, and also seals all my seams.
A guy I know who ran a caravan hire business for many years says it'll out perform the old butyl mastics.

I used a product called rope caulk. It is an non hardening caulk that works like modeling clay. This is removable, pain table and very waterproof. It does not glue like liquid caulks that set up. My windows and the roof vent were done with this and my camper sits outside since built, no leaks, can remove. I got this stuff at Lowes over where the foam window and door seals are. I grew to like this stuff allot.
