high tech "shelter"

http://www.popularmechanics.com/technol ... -shelters/ article this month on a shelter design. Sounds to me like they need to rethink how it is made, all those fancy electronics, and a reliance on a generator seems to be a failure to me. Much better to have thick insulation and solar for a survival shelter.

I agree, but it would be a great design for someone who was trying to get a lucrative govt contract to built emergency shelters. In that case, it wouldn't matter how well they worked out.

I read the article and it always amazes me how folks like that get the supposed "seed millions", the "nasa engineer" and yet the thing is little more than a big porta-potty that gets instantly cold and requires a generator and who knows what else. You lose your RFID and you are locked out. Those look like real comfy beds. I bet the foamie folks on this board could build that thing, have it weigh about 100 lbs, a fully equipped galley and cost less than $2,000. And also make it "stackable" if that is a requirement. I have an $89 Wally World tent that is bigger (8 x 14), more comfy, weighs a fraction, and by myself I can set it up completely in 15 minutes. With the wife, 10 minutes. Oh, and it fits on a shelf in my garage. My "solar generator" cost less than $200, is fully self contained and is easily transported. My HF generator cost $90 and can run everything I have, that includes the automatic ice maker (no kidding).

In a disaster, the electric goes...so do the gas pumps. Generators like gas.

Wow, that thing is ridiculous. I'm with all a ya. Someone with too much money and not enough common sense put that together.

Cheers,

It looks more like the disaster shelter of the present ... with the actual disaster yet to come.

Well, if it's a government funding source, I can see how he got it. It's not too hard to "baffle with bullroar" most of those in government. I'm siding with the rest of you. Lack of solar, and dependent on a generator and gasoline source, there doesn't seem to be much to "dazzle anybody with brilliance" here.

I guess after a few posts it is no longer a zombie thread.

I was amused at the assertion that they could “innovate” some top and bottom vents to keep it cooler. Right, guys. Make sure you get a grant to fund your tests on that.
