Eventually I'll be using my '55 T-bird for a tow vehicle when I'm going solo to car shows and long distance cruises, when the wife goes along it'll probably be her '11 Ford Edge

and a more recent picture.

That Thunderbird does look nice! Should be a neat setup. Are those Halibrand wheels?

Enjoyed your signature. I think I'm decisive, but not sure.

How's this?

I guess not everyone has kept up with all of your excursions. I for one LOVE this build! I had and old Willies M38 in my younger years. I sure wish I had it back. I would have a TD exactly like yours! Kudos my friend.

I would like to use this...the wifey's new wheels. But center mount exhaust tips prohibits a hitch install.

Our tow vehicle took longer to rebuild than any of the trailers I've built... but we love it.

Thank you Lonnie! Yep, that was a true bucket list trip for me. My teardrop is very simple compared to most of the ones here - basically just a bed and some storage. There were a few M38s on that trip last summer - they would be better-suited for the long distance stuff than my MB is.

Jackdaw - that's a sweet setup too! What sort of engine do you have in the bus?

Just split the exhaust tips.

We're currently running a type 1 aircooled 1600 twinport with twin Kadrons...... However we're planning on swapping it for a Subaru water cooled unit to help with towing.

NICE splittie ! How much does the teardrop weigh ? I towed my 820 lb Little Guy Teardrop for near 5 years with a 1965 VW Beetle. Prolly put near 50,000 miles on the tear.

Now I have a 1968 Eriba, Puck. She weighs 620 (dry) and I've had her fer near a year now and did a 2,571 mile run to Washington and back to SoCal...last August. Pulled the trailer up into Crater Lake,Mt. Hood, and thru the redwoods and Hwy 1

At one point I hadta catch up with the group of 45 VWs and put the pedal to the floor( or near to it) and pulled the Puck at 75mph...what a white knuckler !

She's sportin a 1776cc motor with an oil cooler and external oil filter with a double barrel Zenith carb....VROOOOOM !!!

Cheers, The Teardrop's 600kg loaded...so 1220 lb. We have considered a 1776 set up much the same as yours....One of the things that put me off was the fuel consumption. We're getting about 16 MPG when towing.... and I'd guess a bigger motor isn't going to give many more mpg. Our fuel cost over here would make you guys cry!! So fuel economy is important...
The other thing was the cooling... constantly worrying number 3 pistons going to cook....
The subaru set up should give us more torque and better MPG ...for similar money than the 1776/external cooler/ twin carb setup was going to cost to build. We even thought about importing a motor from the states.... as it would be cheaper to buy one and have it shipped than to have one built over here.
We aren't to worried about crawling along .... as long as we're going to get there

Primary tow vehicle will be 2004 Ford Excursion. Secondary 2000 F350 - use that when we or know we are going someplace where we want to bring back something that would only fit in the bed of the truck. Third - and much less likely at this point - 07 Town and Country.
My hobby is genealogy, I raise dust bunnies as pets.
