viable tow vehicle?

Postby ae6black » Fri Jul 08, 2016 6:43 pm

Has anybody ever towed with a corvette? I may loose my tow vehicle in a divorce settlement and was wondering if a corvette would work? Sounds crazy but the price is right. the engine is certainly big enough. What do you think? Do they even sell frame hitches for a corvette?

What year? I have seen hitches for C4's. You should have plenty of power, plenty of braking. I have a 85, and the thing that would concern me is that the rear leaf spring is made of a composite, kind of like fiberglass. BTW, I broke one a few years ago just messing around.

I am not really qualified to reply, but I have to ask if ground clearance, among other things, would be an issue? :stompspam:

am not qualified to say yes or no but last year at the Lynden, Wash. trailer get-together there was a couple from Canada with a '63 split-window towing an original little Scotty trailer - late 50's/early 60's. He said it tows just fine..

I am not qualified, but I've seen motor cycles and trikes towing them. Should be possible.

apparently this parts company feels it is doable... http://www.ecklerscorvette.com/exterior ... tches.html

seems reasonable to me so long as you have a lightweight trailer, vet that the car is capable (yes, that was intended) and drive responsibly

another point to be made about Corvette's are that underneath they are built with a full frame like a truck - they are not a uni-body chassis. As to whether they are rated to tow anything, you will have to check the dealer or GM.

From what I'm reading though, each generation is very different. The "frame" might be aluminum, or there might be nothing of any real substance in the back to attach to.

If you can find a receiver for it. I doubt a small tear would be a problem.

they are using a aluminum frames now but they are still the full perimeter type frame they have used for all of the years they have made Corvettes. Corvette was the first vehicle they ever used the new frame forming process called "Hydro Forming" on a few years ago. Just about all company's use this process now for making all of the frames on their pick up trucks now. I just don't know if Corvette's are even rated to tow let alone a hitch is even made for them?

On a whim I checked to see if etrailer.com offers a trailer hitch for a 1995 Corvette (a random year for an older Corvette). They do. etrailer.com/hitch-1995_Chevrolet_Corvette

Trailer Hitches for Chevrolet
Hitches are custom designed by Draw-Tite, Reese, Hidden Hitch, Curt, and Torklift to fit your Chevrolet. Choose the hitch that is right for your towing needs and your budget. All hitches come with a limited lifetime warranty and are manufactured in the USA. We offer over a custom hitch for virtually every Chevrolet on the road.

etrailer has a trailer hitch available for a 2013 Corvette too. Did not search for any years between 1995 and 2013. I was unable to find them for Corvettes newer than 2013. It seems that a trailer hitch may, or may not, be available for a Corvette depending on its model year.

I have a C5 Corvette with a class 2 hitch. I installed primarily to mount a hitch mounted bicycle rack on my convertible. I have not towed the teardrop since I have a pickup truck for that purpose but feel it would have no trouble. I have towed my utility trailer on runs to the HD. Here is a picture
