First Dutch Oven Wapak 8??!! What do I have??

Postby SuperShady1 » Mon Jun 03, 2013 2:00 pm

Well after all the goodness of the Dutch Oven fun at the Damn Gathering I decided to look at the local flea markets and CL for a little Dutch Oven. I found two and could not resist.

Here is the first one that I got for a combo price on this Wapak 8 and a bunch of Griswold frying pans and muffin pans. I'll post those later. These were part of someones garage full of everything sale and he wanted to move a bunch of pieces that were a mix and mash. :)

Here is the Wapak 8, any help would be appreciated. The lid is tight , and no cracks ...sits flat.

I found a no 8 trivet in his pile and added it to the deal.

Do not know much about Wapak....

You my friend have found the Rolls Royce of cast iron !

A side note....should you want to use it as a camp oven simply add a gas stove grate under it to allow room for the coals and a short length of heavy chain around the top to contain the top coals and you have it converted to a camping dutch oven!

Here is Wimperdink's version of the above idea.....Image

here is a little history stolen from Wickapedia......

Wapak Founded: 1903

The Wapak Hollow Ware company was named after its hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, where it produced several lines of "thin wall" (lightweight manufacture) cast iron skillets. Information about this company is scarce but bankruptcy in 1926 is the reason listed in the Auglaize County records for Wapak's disappearance. This line of cook wear does not have the indian head symbols on it. The oldest cast iron cookware was in fact called Indean Head Wapak and had been making cast iron skillets and cook ware since the late 1700's

That is a great find! If it was mine, I would only use that DO in the house and get a camp oven with legs for camping. I believe that is a very valuable DO and would not want to damage it with charcoal or see it grow legs and disappear while camping. Enjoy it, you made a fine choice.

The cross design on the lid caught my eye and now after your comments will keep DO to the house rotation for meals.

I would not want this DO to go walkabout when we are camping.

I do have a Le Creuset large brassier that I got for 20 bucks at the flea market that I tend use a lot, but with this DO I hope to use it then just look at it.

I did pick up a second DO for 20 bucks off of CL from an estate..limited markings but well made..will post pictures shortly and will get it ready next outing.

That's awesome Shady ... wish I could run into one like that. Use it well ... use it often.

Nice find!

I got a used-once 12in deep Emeril cast iron DO on Craigslist for $10 that I use only in the house (no legs). It's not uncommon to find nicely priced cast-off cast iron on CL. Oftentimes people don't know what they have, or they think it's damaged goods if there is a little rust on it.

The wapak and some of the griswold frying pans got to cook up some bacon for a big family breakfast. Of course seasoning the pans was not the intent??!! :D

I did find a CL DO that is not marked with the manufacturer name on it but it appears to be old and well made...pictures soon.
