Just got a Coleman 200 11/50

Postby bonnie » Sat Nov 02, 2013 5:49 pm

Was wasting time junk shopping and spied a little round globe sitting up on a shelf. After some digging I unearthed a Red top Coleman 200. It was $22. I tipped it to read the date on the bottom and dumped gas on my leg. :( Took it to the counter and asked them to hold it for me. From the few pictures I have found on the net, It may be all original. It's hat, fuel cap and knob are all red. The bottom is nickle. The hat has some chipping around the bale. Even came with a mantel.

After reading about how rare/old it may be, I'm afraid to touch it. :NC

Not sure that is the right vent for it ( can't tell if it's a tall one or not ) and maybe the wrong fuel cap, but the rest looks good. certainly the globe is a rare one.
Good score! :applause:

 Good score. Swap out the globe for a new one . The globe that is on it is hard to find and might be worth something.

Very nice find. Super price. Dont be afraid of it, you cannot hurt it. It has lasted this many years for a reason. I do understand those who want to protect the cool old glass, but for me the old lantern burning with the old glass is what it is all about. Get that lantern cleaned up and light it on fire! :applause:

On the subject of sunrise glass. I think (and it is my experience) that loose glass on a shelf is more likely to get broken then when housed on a lantern. I have broken several globes, all of which were out of the protection of the lantern.

Bonnie

Bad news. The vent on that is the wrong vent. In your picture you can see way too much of the screw up top above the vent nut. It should have the taller vent. The fuel cap should be nickel as well.

But all is not bad. As long as the Fount ( tank ) does not say Maid in Canada, you have one of the first year Coleman made the 200 model lantern. 1950 to mid 1951. Coleman then changed things and made the 200A from there to 1983. This web page ( about 10 picture down ) will show you what the taller vent will look like.

Darn good deal for $22 even with the wrong vent. Be careful cleaning it. a green scrubby pad from the camp mess kit will strip the nickel off.
