Stress Crack in Lantern Globe

Postby M C Toyer » Wed Nov 06, 2013 2:04 pm

I have a vintage (made in USA) Dietz Comet with a stress fracture running from top to bottom of the clear globe (Syracuse NY USA embossed). There is no separation yet.

I already have a replacement globe for regular use.

My question is, would lighting the lantern with the cracked globe be likely to destroy it?

BTW I also have a new (made in Japan) Comet and they're almost identical except for the embossing on the globe and tank. I guess time will tell how durable it is.

I ran a lantern with a cracked globe for several runs. It did not break it, but it made a really weird chatter and singing type noise. The noise was loud and kind of scary like it was going to burst but it never did.

It should not hurt anything. It might eventual break if you use it a lot.
