Not sure what I got

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

Not sure what I got

Postby Rhino Ray » Sun Nov 24, 2013 7:10 pm

A buddy of mine bought a house that was loaded with stuff stored under it. The previous owners didn't want it so he cleaned it out and found this. I did some work for him so he gave me the lantern.

It still has fuel in it and one of the mantels came off. It does have some paint missing but looks like its in good shape other wise. I'm able to turn knobs and pump but I haven't tried to light it yet. . :D

What do I have and what is it worth?114642

You have a nice 228F (Bighat) with a birthday of 6-65 Worth 15-25 where I come from. Top end if it burns. Nice lantern!

You have a nice big hat.

It is worth all of the camping memories you can cram into it, and whatever value you place on a cool item that you can tinker with and enjoy.

I would treasure it for those reasons.

I'm sure that the Coleman experts will give you more details, but most of them were made by the tens of thousands and are in similar condition to yours. Many sell at flea markets and yard sales for just $5 to $15 dollars, or less. My 228E was bought for 50 cents and given to me as a gift.

Clean it; if necessary, rebuild it; show it some love; but above all, burn it and put pictures up here for us to see!

A nice working big hat is worth a lot because now you are in the bighat club. Welcome.

Light it and show us! :applause:

So long as the fuel that's in it isn't full of rust sludge, and doesn't smell like pump gas, it should be fine to use.

White gas (camp fuel) is highly refined and doesn't go bad like auto fuel.

What KC said on the fuel. My stove and several other lanterns posted have been lit on fuel that was at least 30 years old. If it has foul smelling gasoline in it, then you will need to clean and refuel. Just tie on some new mantles and give it a try. You may just surprise yourself. Nice score there.

Yep the 220e/228e and 220f/228f are some of the mose common lanterns out there. real workhorse of a lantern. The 220 have the small vent hoods on them and 228 have the big vent hoods ( Hats.)

I love my Big hats.

Image

The trick in to find a Big hat that was born ( rolled off the assembly line ) on the same month and year you were. the 220 and 228 were made all the same year that is why the tanks bottom read 220X , 228X for the model. The collar of the lantern had the true model on it.

220 1927
220B 1932-1942
220C 1944-1946
220D 1947-1951
220E 1952-1963
220F 1964-1973
220H 1974
220J 1975-1979
220K 1980-1983

Good hunting :)

Well I finally got it lit, barely. It seems like the valve at the bottom of the pump only works intermittently. I tried soaking it with carburetor cleaner but no dice. I even tried to back it out but started striping the slit that the screwdriver goes in. I may get enough pressure built up in it for a lantern lighting but not for full time use.

Bring it to the DAM gathering and we will wrench on it.
