Is it a Fake? I think so.

Is it a Fake? I think so.

So in the afterglow of the contest here is a lantern that is already going for big bucks. It is my humble opinion that this lantern is a fake. Please chime in with your opinion. The vent has not blue ring and is perfect. The seller is saying that the fount is repainted. But no pics of the vent up close. It will be very interesting to see what is sells for . Already 22 bids! Six days to go. Insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could not read the year in the pic of the bottom of the lantern that shows the year , could You?

This one? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Coleman ... 5400f358a4 . I see 11/71 when I look on the magnified view. The angle is poor, so it's hard to read, but it is as advertised. Could still be fake, though. Seems like folks will even pay stupid money for the ones that are advertised as fakes. Sure would like to see what it looked like before the repaint. After the last one, it would have had to be pretty bad to be worth the trouble.

Is it my eyes or does the fount look like it was originally green or is it just the cast from the lighting?

It has a new cage that is for sure. The paint is nice but that vent is painted, that is my opinion. That paint will burn like a potato chip when and if it is fired. Most paint will put up with 180 degrees unless it is silicone resin paint or some hybrid. Glam photos, just all wrong.

I'm guessing it's a fake. Way too clean and shiney. The color in the pics also seem to be a little off. It seems to be a ting more brown than mustardy in color. They probably had the vent re-done and did the paint to match. That's just a guess though. I remember a few years back someone was selling fakes on e-pray and getting big bucks for them. Hey he said vintage and not original that's how he gets away with it.

Did you take a gander at the other 2 lanterns he has for sale now? Total fakery. The brass that he says is probably is a 220B is not and any one who has dipped a toe into the vintage Colemans can easily spot that. The pump cap is a pressed steel cap with 2 screws. Those appeared in the 220D series. Until then the pump was a screw in cap. So easy to spot. Plus all the BRASS !!!!!! And the lantern he calls a "Military kerosene burner" is made up of a MilSpec fount. Top of something else, probably an E model as they are common and cheap and pre heater cup added. Both fakes and miss represented. Call those 2 lanterns frauds.

It's a real shame, too, because the quality of the "restorations" are very nice, IMO. Even as fakes, they are nice lanterns, to my eye.

Randy hit it right on the nose. The ebay name is well-known on the Coleman forums - obviously not for good reasons. The person does beautiful work, but people who don't know what to look for are getting taken to the cleaners!

And yes, the person does put a lot of time into "restoring" the lanterns, so there is some value there, but it should be clearly labeled as a REPRODUCTION/RESTORATION.

This is exactly why I don't buy the really pretty ones. And many collectors feel the same way.

Oh and another thing - the seller doesn't answer questions.

I just looked at some of the other lanterns that seller has for sale. Some look to be strangely labeled or even frankified. One says its military and is clearly not military.

Those other 2 are fakes and misrepresented to the point of being criminally fraudulent. In my opinion. At least on the gold bond he did state the fount had been repainted and a new decal installed.

Yep it is not real. He is on the Coleman collectors forum and every one give him grief about them. I did not read the add again but he usaly states that it had been paint to look like, or some other disclaimer. There is even an YouBoob video of his stuff. I have no problem with him making them as long as he is not trying to pass them off as true Gold bonds.

one of his videos.
