Camp Chef pizza iron?

Postby rmcelroy » Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:51 am

Hi all, I havn't been around in quiet a while. I have a few old Iron pieces, but I have a question. I have recently discovered the advantages of cooking Pizza's with iron. I started with a small skillet and liked it so much I ordered a Camp Chef pizza pan.

My question concerns the surface. There is quiet a bit of roughness, is this a quality issue, or is this something that will go away with more seasoning? All of the other iron I have are slick as glass.

Thanks all.

IMO that is a quality issue. The new stuff just doesn't seem to be as smooth as the good old iron.

You can sand it smooth with a DA and re-season, if you find it necessary.

I have a good friend who works for Nucor steel. He has proclamed many times they just can't keep the contaminates out of the scrap that is coming down stream in the reclaimed scrap steel and iron. It requires multiple firings to float off the undesirable materials. I would imagine the other foundrys are having similar problems.

I would suggest you try and season the piece with 100% bees wax. I have had excellent results with this method. All that is needed is to heat the piece very hot on the home stove and melt enough wax to coat it. I simply use a large wad of paper towel and coat inside and out.

I took this

in 2 coats

the second time I used it ,I fried 2 eggs in it just to see if I could. They skated around the pan without a care.

In case you haven't read the related posts on bee's wax seasoning, make sure you use 100/ct pure bee's wax, no paraffin or other fillers.
