Bolt-together box trailer kit with roof top Tent

Postby 123jay » Wed Oct 23, 2013 2:18 am

Hi ever one. I try to go camping ever other weekend. The job I have is taking meals to ones that are on hospice .At time's the jobs get a little hard.So camping is my whey of getting my head clear.
No more on the dirt ,rattlesnakes and me just do not work together
I like the teardrop look but may not work with me ,most camping is ATV and way off road . So for me I think at this time it'll be some kind of box trailer with a tent are covered trailer.. I like the army look as I will be rebuilding a old willy jeep.
So I am look at the DINOOT- M48,funcars04-M4 bug out wagon , are there's a shop that makes a alum trailer m416
I seem to over think things so any input would be great .
No mater what I will go to Harbor and get a trailer tomorrow. So please anything you have to add ADD

Putting a car-top camper on a HF trailer should meet your primary goal of getting up off the ground. There is a thread on a variation of this type on the cargo conversions board. Look at: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=57582

I have been to off road events where a couple rolled their Samurai off their flatbed and then set their tent up on the trailer, so it is not an unusual concept.

Let us know how it works out.

12 foot trailer, front 4 foot for the quad, back 8 feet for the teardrop. You need a truck to tow with that loaded tongue weight. I have seen a few of those built, looks like it works great.

Finding someone to fab up an aluminum M416 style trailer tub is definitely possible, although pricey. This one I had built cost about twice what a Dinoot M-Series tub will cost.

Image

HF frame base with a plywood cargo box and folding roof top style tent unit on top is a nice way to go

Well I got cash, plan and no fiberglass .
Got hold of Funcars04 on E bay today and found out there kit is not a kit They do repair panels .So when I see a kit for sale it's one that the buyer want a bigger one .
They build with a slip mold so they can make as deep up to 24" are how wide you want as as long as you need . the real ones are only 38 & 1/2" wide.
I got my HF 40" x 48" trailer done . So at this time will build to that . But may go with the 38 & 1/2 " one it be ease to cut down the trailer just 3/4" per side.
There a lot to think about what tailgate I will use. If I use a 80's jeep tailgate it has to have higher side walls than 16" .I see used jeep tailgate for $25 to $50 .I have to have a jeep tailgate cut down it's 1" to high.
then I think I like it 24"deep but will have a custom tailgate made to reach the bottom.. what to do? Then there a way to make 5' long by adding 6" brackets front and back to the frame .Cant beat the price for the fiberglass and it have the army look and be custom looking. OH now do I want the top rail on the in side are outside for $ 45.00 more

An M-Series Dinoot M416 style tub is easily shortened to 48" and is already the correct 40.5" wide :D I'm making a 5' long one right now for towing behind my Sidekick. They take a standard Jeep CJ tailgate. The tub is 20" tall.

I got everything order will be here on the April 2 at the bus station
There was a lot to think about ,at least for me.
How deep to make the box they can go 24" deep , what tailgate to use at first I was going to use a Jeep tailgate and go 20" deep but that will mean put the hinge bottom just on fiberglass are trying to make some bracket to tie it to the frame .So I went with a 17" deep box.So the frame and hinge are together and no lip to have to lift over are break out.
After look at many pictures I want a full tailgate.that way I can use the full Tailgate opening and save a $100 are so on a gate
As I look at many pictures most seam to be boxes on a frame. I like that the sides over hang on the frame .
I could never get my head around smooth sides ,makes me think of a box on a frame. With no resets It's not right
On the side that cover the frame rails I went a full 2" .That way I could use the Harbor freight frame bolts holds for the lights and fenders
As far as the top rails I went for inside the bed they sell many different hard covers. That way It will slow down anyone with a knife.

Time to get started . Went to the bus stop and pick up the trailer panels. It was heaver than I though it be. It was only the front and 2 sides it was 52 lb of fiberglass just for 3 panels on a 40" by 48 .
One kit that I look at is 40" by 72" they put down that it's only 45lb with 4 panels. And a box on a frame
One other one on the net said it about 75 lb for 38&1/2" BY 72" but was chopper gun And a box on a frame with 4 panels. The other two are hand laid
My plan for the trailer is to do a full tailgate that will have a slide-out and use there hard top cover and a van pullout tent ,are a roof top tent but that down the road.
I believe roly nelson had a teardrop trailer that was 40"wide
Ilike this kit for these reasons #1 it has resets like the real deal .
It covers the side of the frame like the real deal not a box on a frame.
After getting it and look at some pictures of other kits that are just to thin
It looks like the side ,top, bottom of each panel have 6 to 10 layers .
This is the back you can see the flange to bolt it down 1.5" from the bottom

To day put some primer on and set it on the trailer and felled it with fire wood.
Dreaming about the tailgate.
