Actually, in a cold climate you want fairly close quarters so their body heat will keep them warm when the temperature falls. That's part of why we bring our two girls in when the weather is cold. There's just too much space for them to warm up, even with the deep mulch/bedding.

You have to watch out for those inner-city chickens. They can go bad in no time. :frightened: Good Luck

Discussion situations with our vet about when to draw a line before putting down an animal , he recounted a story where a customer spent £700 $ 1000 on a £5 hen that was unwell. Now I've probably offended most of you by even discussing this.

Vets who treat farm animals often make commercial decisions.
Pets on the other hand are normally emotional decisions.
Mind that the hens don't become pets or if they do, take out insurance.

Well, while I will admit to having once had a grand-cat (yes, I had spent a grand on him, maybe two, over the course of three years) but then he went on to live another 12 years. He was my sweety, although the vet had a note in his chart that he was psychotic. (He really didn't like it when I had the twins, they had a tendency to take up HIS lap space. But he didn't do anything to them, he just stayed out of their reach and occasionally growled at them if they DID manage to give him a hug. This isn't one of mine, but it sure looks familiar! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN1r4HtY6os.)

I have never had enough advance notice to take a hen to the vet. I usually found out one wasn't doing well when I found the body. But our vet is a bird specialist, so she might even be willing to work on a chicken, if needed.

Nice Coop! Put some wheels on one end. It will be easier to move around.

I got the permit from the county so we just need chickens. 3/17 is when we pick them up...

The chickens are here. They're growing FAST:

These are when we first got them on 3/17. They're already twice as big and eating and pooping like crazy!

My Grandson thought we should raise some chickens on the place..I told him I would like to, but we have so many predators that it would but kinda hard to do that. Between the coyotes, fox, owls and eagles it would be difficult. He thought for a bit and said. "Maybe we could just do eggplants." I agreed to that.
