Land Rover Series 3 (1971 to 1985)

Land Rover Series 3 (1971 to 1985)

Postby grantstew8 » Mon Apr 21, 2014 5:41 am

Hi
As my next project, I'm considering buying a series 3 Landy and putting in a discovery 200TDi engine without the turbo (so it does not wreck the gearbox and diff) to use as my tow vehicle.
Has anyone used a series 3 and have any advice, pointers, links, forums?
There are loads on ebay and I'm looking at a galvanised chassis and then replace the (petrol) engine and put in a 200Di

Obviously, it will need to be red to match the teardrop

Just bought this 1974 series 3 Landy. My son in the photo is delighted and will help with restore. It was on the road in Dec 2013. Needs some chassis welding hence the skew front bumper!

I love old Land Roves and old Land Cruisers.
Seeing your new project photo brings a smile to me.
When I saw it, i immediately remembered the movie, " The Gods Must Be Crazy".
You have gotta have a good winch and better brakes.

Thanks Dan and Bob.

I must finish my TD before I get started on this project. I've joined a Land Rover forum and I'll not bore you with the gory details of a Land rover rebuild but may post highlights.
When we use her to tow the TD, I'll post photos for your entertainment!

regards

As usual I've taken this land rover thing to a new height. I was thinking of building a land rover based TD to match the TV.

The bed of the 109 tub is 6'1" so I'll just fit. It will mean a compromise on the kitchen/galley. I may use a station wagon, so there are doors on the sides and a door at the rear.
Something to occupy my mind in the winter. In the mean time we've teardrop camping to do and a land rover to get on back on the road.

Setup a new blog for the Landy for those interested.

We're off in the td for the next two weekends in a row. More videos to come. Hope this glorious scottish sunshine holds!

Thanks for the info. I LOVE the old Land Rovers! We don't see to many of them over here in the States.

Boy, you sure are getting into a lot of work there. But then again I guess that is true for any older vehicle restoration.
I will bet it is going to look great when done.

Funniest "B" class movie ever put out. I rented that movie back in the VHS days and for the first 5 minutes I thought they gave me a national geographic movie by mistake.
I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction, the world will have a generation of idiot's.

I think I felt the same way when I first watched it. There was a second movie out also. Did you see that one?

An abrupt end to a project!

In April, we bought a rusted broken series 3 88 for £700 from a "dealer" in Kirkcaldy. My son is 17 and has helped with the rebuild and is learning how to grind, cut, weld and graze his knuckles undoing rusty bolts. We've replaced a quarter chassis and dumb irons, wire brushed, red oxide-ed, painted, brake lines, new shocks and were about to put the body back on.

Last night the police arrived and told us it was stolen, we have a sales invoice and V5 registration document. 20 minutes later they picked it up and are returning it to the rightful owner, albeit it in bits but in significantly better shape than we bought it in. If the boot was on the other foot and it was stolen from me, I'd want it back too. We will be in touch with the garage after the police have done their investigation.

I'm pleased it happened now and not in three months when the job was done and we had a gleaming refurbished landy with stainless bolts to hand back the the rightful owner.

Hard lesson No 1
If you buy a car even if it's for a few hundred quid, it's knackered and it's the right price for the condition, do an HPI type check to make sure it's not stolen. It's heart breaking to watch it disappear down the drive on the back of a police tow truck after spending months of blood sweat and tears, not to mention any dreams of expeditions and trips. Oh yes, and taking a bath on the only vehicle I thought would appreciate, is somewhat disappointing. :x

Made me think how I'd feel if someone nicked my TD.

I guess I'll be doing all that DIY I should have been doing instead of welding a land rover.

Grant, I'm so sorry for your unexpected loss. However, you are displaying the right attitude about it all.
Is it possible to sue the garage where you bought it?
