Progressive Dynamics PD4045 install

Re: Progressive Dynamics PD4045 install

My confusion is lessening. Dave from Progressive Dynamics emailed two pdfs (one titled "4045ka connections" and the other titled "4045 switch usage") to me with jpeg photos of the PD4045 with installation notes. I will post them if I can figure out how to do so. After looking at them I called him again today with more questions.

From what Dave verbally told me today (6/5/2014) it seems that Zach is substantially correct that a 15 amp converter breaker is needed in the USA per RIVA standards, in addition to a 30 amp main breaker. I won't mention other alternatives we discussed that may not meet RIVA codes or standards.

In the "4045ka connections" photo I received there is a twin breaker on the left with a 30 amp switch and a 15 amp switch. The 30 amp (main) side gets wired to the incoming AC power. The 15 amp side of the breaker gets wired as a converter breaker according to what Dave verbally told me, similar to Zach's drawing...except that (in the photo) its done with a twin breaker, instead of two single breakers like shown in Zach's drawing. A black (wire that you need to supply) wire needs to be connected from the converter breaker to the factory installed black wire already screwed into the short buss bar on the far right of the PD4045. Or, it would seem, you could unscrew the black wire that is factory installed to the far right buss bar and attach it (the factory installed black wire) instead directly to the 15 amp controller breaker.

I want (at least) three AC circuits. One circuit for the cabin outlets. A second circuit for upper galley outlet(s). A third circuit just to power an AC/DC fridge freezer. Now that I have to return and exchange the AC circuit breakers I bought I may decide to add a fourth circuit for an exterior AC outlet.

I bought all single breakers. I bought one 30 amp breaker and three 15 amp breakers which fill all four available spots on the AC buss. I want to have three AC branch circuits. So I need to return one or two of the breakers I bought in exchange for different ones. In exchange I need either one twin 30 (main) and 15 (converter breaker) amp breaker OR one twin 15 and 15 amp breaker to fit in the four available positions. There are other possibilities too. I might return all four single breakers and get one twin 30/15 breaker and two twin 15/15 breakers...so I can have four AC circuits.

I suggest you take your PD4045 to your hardware store to get the right breakers. This will be my third trip to the store to get the right ones. The first ones did not fit on the AC buss. Keep your receipts handy if you need to make a return.

Dave said for liability reasons Progressive Dynamics will not provide more complete written instructions of the many ways a PD4045 can be wired. Instead they say to have a licensed electrician or RV technician do the installation. It is frustrating that they do not mention, or show, the (needed in the USA per RIVA standards) converter breaker in their installation instructions.

absolutsnwbrdr wrote:I just finished going through this on my build. The PD4045 comes with twelve POSITIVE DC branch circuit leads already installed (10 black rated for 20A, and 2 red rated for 30A). If purchased new it does not have any negative wires coming from it.

To connect your PD4045 to your battery you'll bring a heavy gauge red wire (I used 8GA) from your battery (or switch) to the PD4045 "BATT +" terminal. Then you'll bring a heavy gauge black wire (once again I used 8GA) from your ground bus bar to the PD4045 "BATT -" terminal. All of your 12V accessories & lights then get their negative wires tied to the ground bar.

I had a "charging while towing" connection on my last trailer, although it was through a separate connection. The hot wire from your 7-pin connector gets tied to the camper battery with 8GA wire (minimum) and an in-line fuse. There are fancy ways to have it automatically disconnect when your tow vehicle shuts off, but that's a whole other can of worms. Search "charging while towing" on here and you should find the info.

Here's my particular PD4045 setup...

Zach,

That drawing you posted is about 1,000 times more useful than the entire PD4045 instruction manual. Thank you so more for drawing that up. I have been lurking here for over a year, but just had to get around to actually typing something to say thank you.

So thanks.

Hi,

Can someone please post some pictures of their PD4045 actually installed? I'd like to see where you put it and have the shore power inlet, etc. Most people seem to put this in their galley cabinets somewhere? Thanks so much.

I've always been a bit different, but my electrical compartment is at the head of my bed.

The power inlet, meter, and battery switch are just to the left of the power center.

I still havent finished the compartment cover, but when finished will still allow for air circulation above the power center.

I have a 20' cord that is behind it with a circle cord port on the side of the trailer that I pull it out of.

All,
I have to tell you thank you very much for this thread and all who have contributed. A month ago, I was completely confused and trying to find an electrician or someone to help put all the wiring together in the 4045. After going through this thread a few times (OK a lot of times) I gave it a try. Took a few days to finish, but last night we successfully tested it out and it all worked... I, my wife, and my daughter were actually pretty surprised it worked the first time.

Thanks again!

Re: Progressive Dynamics PD4045 install

I am almost done with my PD4045 install and have a couple remaining question:
In Zack's drawing in the earlier post, he shows the AC Hot wire going to the Bus on the right side of the chassis. What else is that Bus used for since there are 2 other contact screws?

When I am not connected to Shore power, does the PD4045 handle the grounding or do I need to run a green wire from the ground bus to the trailer frame?

From reading this thread, I think I understand that the any additional AC power outlets need to be connected to a 3rd and 4th breaker? The black connects between the breaker and the hot contact on an outlet. No interim PD4045 connections are needed.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick response H.A. The grounding solution has me confused as I thought the ground was through the plug back to the power source from the shore power, Are you thinking that I should connect a second ground to the bus and attach it to the trailer frame? Sorry but that seems redundant unless it is a lack of trust in the shore power ground,

Per the "second Ground", I think you answered it. The shore power ground handles it and the PD4045 handles it when I am not connected to shore power. No need to run a ground wire from the PD4045 to the frame.

And Luckily I didn't have to learn about the green and white wires the hard way.

I am looking forward to wrapping up the electric this weekend.

Thanks for your help.
