Coleman 442

You folks remember my Coleman Aluminum 443 three burner that I restored a few weeks ago -

Well I got her baby sister as well. A Coleman Aluminum 442 double burner. This is how she arrived. Pretty cruddy and nasty for sure – but she works



After a few hours of cleaning, stripping, massaging, polishing – here she is: A gleaming beauty



It’s interesting to note that the 442 and 443 were made only for one year and in the SAME year – 1963. However, the cases for the two are completely different (yeah, I know size differences, but stampings). The inside of the 442 is smooth and the exterior has a little texture and you can really get it to shine with a little polish. Also the tanks are different too. The 442 has the LARGER tank of the two – No this is not a mistake because it will not swap with the 443 ( I tried, but the tabs would not line up)

I'd love to find either one some day soon. I have a thing for objects made of aluminum (to me it's vintage carbon fibre). The Coleman 424 I have now is too new, but I'll use it until I find either a 442 or a 443.

I have a moderate-diameter Lodge cast iron skillet; it's too big for my Coleman two-burner.

Gotta find a three-burner, or two single burners and then have a cabinet/grill made.

I really want a 443... really. But I think I'd only be able to use the center burner!

Can I ask what you used to clean it up? I am working on two 242's. I've found some things that work and don't work. Are there replacement decals? Were the grates originally painted grey? I have them looking much better, but I could use some advice. Aluminium polish did not work. Oven cleaner helped. Muriatic acid diluted helped. La's Awesome Orange helped. And a fine wire brushed helped. It looks good now with no damage. How did you clean the hard to get, stuck on grease in the holes? I was very careful with the harsh cleaners on the aluminium. I know now it is hours and hours to restore a stove. I thought of painting the aluminium with gray high heat paint, but I don't like using it unless it was original. Any good advice would be appreciated.

I just put the second coat of red paint on the fuel tank. I can't spray all of it and I got a paint run. It has to dry for a day, sand it, flip it over and try to finish it. I took it all the way down to bare metal. I could have done it differently to spray it, but I don't have a paint booth. It will come out great, but it will take some time.
