light weight cast iron

Postby vincigj » Sun Jul 27, 2014 3:02 pm

Found an oval 12-in x 5-in covered ci "pot". Dark enamaled covered. Half the weight one would expect. Is it usable as ab dutch oven?

Flat bottom....? find a couple gas stove grates

Domed top....? use a couple feet of log chain or a 1 1/2 loop of light gage steel to hold the coals on the top.

Yes Virginia there is a Santa Clause OPPS I meant it will make a great Camp oven.

Even larger ovens are great for a small turkey or large turkey breast or a huge loaf of hot bread just go for it !

Yes flat bottomed. Ok, Now I understand grates. Saw somone's walker, dish grate project and didnt know why until now.
It has a dome top but there is a valley along the rim before the top starts to dome. It would support coals. And that was were I hesitated. Afraid it would warp with the heat.
I'll get a second chance this weekend to pick it up.

Thanks for the help.

REQUOTE From back when

Now quit worrying and get cooking.

Mary was right a short section of log chain will keep the coals on the lid

and an old gas stove grate make a great set of legs to allow you to use it just like any other camp oven.

Here is my chicken fryer with it's artifical legs...

Is it thick like cast iron? Or is it just an enameled steel pot?

My light weight "cast iron" Dutchs are a silvery color and I've been using them for thirty years. They are made out of the same material as my "cast iron" beer cans.

River runners in central Idaho switched to aluminum Dutch ovens many years ago for obvious reasons. I've never looked back and can't even articulate the cooking difference anymore –other than the weight.

I carry a 12" and a 10" with the legs cut off. For traditional D.O. cooking I have folding legs. They work great without the legs on the stove.

Cleanup? Just as easy as cast iron.
