They look like they may be what is called piggy-back shipping containers. Trucks move them to where they can be loaded onto ships or rail cars for transport long distances.

I've also seen them called "Mud Trailers" as they are used to
transport the various "Muds" used when drilling for oil. I believe
the "muds" are used as lubricants or such.

How did you know?

Are you familiar with them, or are you good at searching?

I am glad they are some good and plausible answers. Because I tend to look for the conspiracy answers which can be a bad thing. :o

I have seen them locally, and googled the company. I live in a highly industrial part of Texas, with tons of refinery's around. I knew they were used for water transport.

Drillers/frackers. I saw a lot of these sitting around gas well sites when I was traveling through the Marcellus Shale region of PA. They were putting these on site and using regular tanker trucks to refill.

Point of clarification ... they are portable tanks for water, "mud", etc. however they do not have adequate load carrying ability to actually haul the liquids (single dual wheel axle limited to 20,000 lbs in most states.) When traveling down the road they are usually empty or almost empty. These tanks are almost always part of a mobile drill rig, dust control or washing station for a crushing operation, or other temporary work setup where the actual liquid is hauled in seperately, but needs to be stored on site while being used. Some have agitators (paddles, augers, pumps, etc.) that keep the contents stirred so that the "mud" doesn't separate.

Here in the oil fields of Texas those are called "Frac" tanks as someone suggested. They are used for storage of water, mud, drilling fluids, or whatever. I use them when I am hydro-testing pipelines once they are complteted. If you retain your water and test it, there are not as many permits required by D.O.T and rail Road commision. We use them in the oilfield every day. heck I used to build them. Rental is about $500 a day sometimes. I had 25 on my job a couple of months back for 90 days.
