Different PD4045 versions?

Postby RetchedOne » Fri Feb 06, 2015 3:47 pm

Are there different PD4045 versions?

I guess I'm asking , "Do they all have the charge wizard, inverter etc standard?"

EDIT -
I don't see multiple variations, it's just some descriptions list "this oen has the charge wizard" which would lead one to believe some do not.

The PD4045 does one thing well, it charges your battery and supplies 12V DC. It is not an inverter though there are inverter chargers that do.

Can you recommend something?

I should clarify the end goal is 2 X 100 watt solar panels, an inverter to run a small 120AC fridge at times, and be able to charge 2 batteries off the solar or shorepower. If the solar and inverter can not keep up with the fridge, it will be turned off and kept cool with blocks of ice.

I have a budget, but won't buy only cheap stuff... you get what you pay for.

I'm reading through posts here in the electrical section to see what I can figure out.

My thinking right now for me is to get a PD4045 to be hooked up to 120V (shore or a generator) and distribute 12V power to the CT, charge four 6V batteries and be a breaker for one or two 120V AC circuits. I will add solar power to also charge the batteries. I am thinking of also using an 120V Energy Saver refrigerator with 120 V AC while connected to shore power and then switch to an inverter when 120V AC is not available.

Instead of using an inverter to power an AC powered fridge why not use an AC/DC powered fridge? www.truckfridge.com is one supplier that sells both built-in and portable chest style AC/DC fridge/freezers.
(excerpted from the truckfridge website)

Although MOST trucks do not need the additional option of 110vAc electric, we do offer the option for those whom find it necessary.

TruckFridge AC/DC models automatically switch from 12vDC battery power to 110vAC household electric from shorepower, household electric, generator, etc. when available and plugged in, then back to 12vDC when 110vAC is no longer available. This is used mainly for long term use when idling is not an option.

(Note: Although the 110vAC will run on a correctly sized inverter, this is not the best method. It is best to let the fridge run on 12vDC, as the inverter duplicates the fridge electronics by changing 12vDC to 110vAC and the fridge then changes 110vAC back to 12vDC.)

The cost difference. I am already way over budget.

We have a http://www.progressivedyn.com/all_in_one_pd4000.html a 185W high voltage panel which required a MPPT controller http://www.morningstarcorp.com/products/sunsaver-mppt/ and a Morningstar Suresine inverter http://www.morningstarcorp.com/products/suresine and powering a Waeco CF 50 http://en.waeco.com/3122_484.php which will run off of 120AC or 12V DC.

The Waeco makes the inverter unneeded, at least for the purpose for powering the refrigerator. The high voltage solar panel was a mistake on my part as it was intended for a grid tie system and puts out 70+v with no load and required the MPPT controller to get the voltage down to useable current. What this means is that in a shaded setting which would useless for conventional panels.
We spent 8 days on the north shore of Lake Superior in a site with only about an hour of unshaded sun on the panel and at the end of the eight days we were are 64% state of charge on the 150 AH battery. I have a second 145W some what high voltage flexible panel that hooks up to a Steca PMW (I now have a second Sunsaver MPPT controller).

I made choices and mistakes that have worked well and everything plays well together.

In what sense? Of no shore power is available (battery only) you can run 110 stuff (via conversion from 12VDC) off of it right?

No, the PD's do not have that ability. They are simply a battery charger (120 VAC to 12 VDC) and a distribution center for 120 VAC and 12 VDC circuits.

Well, I guess I missed the boat somewhere then. I'm about to install mine. I thought the "converter" part of it was the dc-ac inverter..

What do most folks do that have them for off grid 110? Just a standard inverter plugged into the 12v side of it?

Converter makes DC power from AC power. So 120 VAC in and 12 VDC out. In this case the DC is used to charge the battery as necessary and supply DC to the DC circuits.

Inverter makes AC power from DC power.

Yes, if you want AC power but don't have a grid connection you need an inverter.

Has any one put in a Progressive Dynamics PD4135 converter/charger?

Mine is suppose to be here Saturday. Hoping I can get it in myself. It is replacing the Elixir 25 in my Outback.
Is either the PD4045 or PD4135 one considered better than the other?
