spare tire?

Postby martymcfly » Thu Feb 26, 2015 7:12 pm

While new car shopping with my daughter, I notice that a lot of new cars don't come with a spare tire anymore. A lot of them come with a big bottle of slime and a 12 volt compressor. I presume this is to save weight. I don't even remember the last time that I had to change a tire on the side on the road. Do I really need a spare tire on my TD?

My teardrop has a full-size spare tire. My standy has a "space saver" spare because it's easier to mount. I have had to use neither of them. But when I did not have a spare for the teardrop, I had a blowout! See Murphy's Law! :D

I needed my spare last August when I had s blow out on my Silver Shadow teardrop. I was glad I had it. 9 pm on a Saturday night on I-70. Not a good time, but there never is a good time for a blow out.

I have a spare and since it is for a CT, it is big and heavy. And I may never used it (I hope). But if I am off the main road, by myself, what am I going to do if I do get a flat that cannot be fixed with the stuff in a can. That is why I carry one. Safety/Security/convenience.

Sometimes a bottle of slime isn't enough....

I was thankful I had a spare underneath the tear. Was quite a ways from the nearest tire dealer.....

Yep, depends on where on travels, IMO. Thinking back over the past decades all my flats have been in out of the way places; Alcan highway in the Yukon, middle of nowhere, Utah and similar places. I guess that's why we have always had a full size spare on the Jeeps and trucks and the trailer. They go places off the beaten path. Our car OTOH is a city car; never far from the urban setting. It has a spacesaver spare and has never had a flat in it's 90,000 miles.

I should probably point out that some of the "out in the boonies" flats occurred when doing out of the ordinary things; low pressure tires on rocky 4x4 yrails. So those don't really count.

Really......slime and a new car? Ask the salesman if you use the slime and it ruins the TPMS sensor, and the tire is not repairable, (slime interferes with the patching glue) will the warranty buy new ones for you??

The last several vehicles I bought (Lexus SC430, SmartFor2, Chevy Impala) didn't have a spare. All had a small compressor and a bottle of goo. I did have a leak on one of them and used the goo to seal it until I got to the dealer. The mechanic says the goo they use now doesn't interfere with the pressure sensor and I haven't had any problems in that regards.

Spare tires (real one's -not Mickey Mouse rejects nor cans of "green slime) just go to prove "Werdahekrwe's Corolary to Murphy's Law: Murphy was an optimist". A lot bettet to have a spare and NOT need it than need and NOT have it  .

I have spares in both teardrop and tow vehicle. If you ever have a flat in an inconvenient or remote place you will be glad you have a spare. I also have a flat repair kit and portable compressor. It's called being self reliant.

In my honest opinion, slime doesn't cut it.

Y E S !

I've changed many trailer tires over the last 35 years.
If you have a problem, it can blow the tire off and ruin the rim.
Biggest improvement I ever made was to avoid class B tires and have nothing but Class C or better, regardless of tire size.

I had my vintage 90 jeep grand wagoner out for a gathering. Now for those of us old enough to remember this thing has a bumper jack.

Well teardrops don't normally have bumpers. all I had was some screw stabilizers on hand when I blew a tire. I learned a lesson that day.

If you can't raise the trailer lower the ground. I placed two stabilizers front and rear and they just wouldn't raise the trailer so I dug a hole under the tire with my trusty camping rip hammer and changed the tire.

Get yourself a cheap scissor jack at least :NC

Good ideal Bob If in a bind with no jack block the axle up and dig under the tire.
