"Me and a buddy went camping in the Snowy's while down in Laramie at Tech school. Had no fire starter of any sort. I pulled the fuel line off the carb, cranked it over to soak some paper towels, hooked the jumpercables to the battery and arced the leads. BOOM instant fire"

And you didn't blow out the diodes in your alternator?

Doesn't bother the alternator one bit. Why should it? Taking power directly from the battery to the jumper cable. Alternator is completely unaware what is going on. I have done this hundreds of times to probably close to a hundred different vehicles ( maybe over 100 ) no problems at all damaging the alternator.

Boom hopefully wasn't the operative word.

Gasoline us too unpredictable for me....

Can't beat good ol bushcraft. Feather stick or cotton fluff from a sock if no other tinder is available....gasoline, white gas, and alcohol just bother me when a match or flint is available.

True emergency? Ok. Different discussion. But relying as a go-to...there are better choices.

I heat our home solely with a wood stove & have used a LOT of kindling over the years .A while back I started using these ............

http://www.supercedar.com/

No more kindling , they start very easy with a match & burn for a long time . Long enough to ignite larger pieces of dry wood on fire . I don't use any more kindling at all . They can easily be broken into 1/3's or 1/4ths ...............

Not sure what the odds are that you'd have all of this on hand if you didn't bring a lighter or matches but thought this was neat and worth a try if haven't eaten all of your chocolate before you realize you have nothing to start your fire with. According to this you need the items shown below +sun, some elbow grease, and patience.

I would use the chocolate to bribe a kid to run a fire bow.

If the sun's that bright, do you need a fire so badly that you'll waste good chocolate to polish the bottom of a used beverage can? :? Eat the chocolate and you'll have enough energy to rub two sticks together.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

I've never tried the parabolic soda can...seems a little out there to me....technically it makes sense, they used to sell solar cigarette lighters ..back in the 70s I remember by dad trying for some time and he couldn't get it to work,.

If a commercially polished and "aimed" wouldn't work, I have my reservations about a polished soda cans ability to perform. Same for the Baggie of urine.

But it sounds like a good project for our next, and last, outing of the year....

Just remember the matches for a high tech fire fire starter.

Here is a strange fire starter I just found on youtube. not that I recommend it, or have tried it.

We save out dryer lint and take a small amount when we go backpacking. Takes up hardly no space or weight.
