.090 Aluminum Sheet

Postby Chaos Smurf » Mon Mar 23, 2015 12:37 pm

Hello All,

I've been lurking for awhile soaking up all the great information. I've read the skinning threads and know .040 aluminum is the sweet spot.

I have an opportunity to buy .090 aluminum sheets.

5x12 .090 Aluminum Sheets
5052 Thickness is .090 and is an 11 gauge
for $75 CDN per sheet

Would I be able to bend this around a 54" bend radius?

That sounds like a heck of a deal. While I have not worked with .090" 5052, that radius is doable. 5052 is stiff. It may require a form of sorts to bend around. It will take some help. I would make a 54" radius template and find a fab shop with a roller to bend it.

That's pretty close to a 3/32" thickness, just under, if that's the only radius you need any sheet metal shop with a 5' wide roll could pre-form it with no problem. Hell for stout, not to mention heavy if your looking to keep it light. Like Bobhav say's take a template to make one accurate trip out of it.

:D :D :D Good luck on your build!

Please, don't buy this.

Long after you have forgotten about what the Al for you build cost, it's weight will still be there..

I used .040, and really could have gone .032. .090 has got to be insanely hard to work with, not to mention over twice as heavy.

Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Unless you are building a zombie shelter, it will be needlessly heavy and you'll be fighting it on every curve.

We use .090 on some of the structure of the A-10's that I work on. That stuff is extremely stout! In fact, we walk on it! It would be a real bitch to bend without using rollers, and would be about 3 times as heavy as .032. Except for the great deal, I can't see a reason to go with something that thick. Stick with .032 or .040.
