Right now I have a recipe for Abalone Chowder,
and we've got a BIG ab in shell still sitting in the deep freeze.
How long should I wait to cook it up......May 1st?? :R

come to NZ, I will take you diving for NZ Abalone, We call em Paua. Depending on where you dive you are allowed 6-10 per person PER DAY!
125mm (5") is the min size limit but I have some 8" shells here (they are the biggest I have seen)

OOhhh...thanks for your kind offer, Felixx. I am a diver and Australia is on my bucket list, but NZ is right up there also. I'm gonna need a couple of months over there to see and do all I have planned. I watched a video of a gentlemen from your region who specializes in preparing abalone (he's an abalone expert) and was very surprised to see the small ab he was prepping for a recipe. But, after reading your above post, I see that is the standard size for the type you mentioned. Our area has red and black abalone, and some of them get huge.
