Want to sew covers for teardrop tires -- any patterns?

Postby catinmoon » Mon Jul 27, 2015 6:59 pm

HI,
It's been a while since I was on the forum. I want to sew some covers to protect the tires on my teardrop since I live in the So Cal desert and the sun is brutal. I don't like any of the vinyl ones since the offgassing is too much. Also, my neighbor buys vinyl covers for her vehicles and they barely last.

Is there a pattern or a general formula for making the tire covers? Any ideas on fabric? I'm thinking Sunbrella or something uv resistant.

They don't need to be fancy, but I want something that will work and last for several years.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It seems easy to me. Can you sew? I am not used to working with cloth so I probably am way off base. I would use cotton canvass. Measure the tire diameter and add four inches. Cut two half circles with the sides straight down to the ground for the front and back of the tire. Split the back 1/2 distance up to clear the axle. Measure the width of the tire at its widest and add 4 inches. Cut a strip of canvass this width 3 times diameter long. Sew or glue with contact adhesive. Some ties to go under the axle so it doesn't blow off.

I think this would make a nice tire cover. You can paint the canvas to water proof it and make it stiffer. At least this is how I'd make a tire cover. A better craftsperson would be able to fit the cover tighter than my dimensions. :-)

Tom pretty much just summed it up. I'd add some good Velcro on the lower part that is split for the axle. Slide it over the axle and Velcro it closed.

Unless you plan to color match to the trailer I'd go with lightest color so they don't absorb the heat. As Tom mentioned cotton canvass sounds good. I'd get some anti-mildew and douse them with it as well.

Hope to see what you come up with.

EDIT: I realize you're not likely to get mildew while it's in storage but I'm thinking, depending upon where you camp,…

Can't beat the price but read the reviews.

I purchased the expensive vinyl covers for my camper: They last for many years. However, these inexpensive canvas covers have worked well on my utility trailer with 15" tires. They don't hold up like the vinyl covers, but they're inexpensive to replace.
