I came a cross a sweepstakes for a used 2004 Ford F-650. I believe a diesel. Anyway, the value was listed as $45,000. For a 2004?

There are lots of variables; regular cab, extended or crew, what kind of box, flatbed, dump or whatever else it is fitted with. The diesels in those are Cummins or Cat and those are expensive engines. Price does not sound unrealistic, depending on the variables.

Whoa!! And I thought my vintage VWs were valuable. No particulars given in the sweepstakes. I entered anyway.

An F-650 is an enormous truck and yes, the diesel option makes it much more expensive. Nothing pulls like a diesel engine. Those truck sell for around $95,000 new, so $45,000 seems about right.

On the other hand, they are more expensive to maintain and, over the last few years, feed. Just now diesel is back to the same cost as unleaded. Looking at the last few years though, I doubt that will last. This thing is an 8 mpg monster meant to pull 20,000 pound loads. Honestly, the only reason I would own one would be to resell it.

Even when petrol and diesel are comparitivly similar in price you still generaly get far more MPG with a diesel.
And yea those motors are super expensive...bad enough for a BB chev diesel

My experience is about a 20% increase with diesel. Unfortunately, that's far offset by the expense of taking care of one. Especially now with the stupid urea fluid you have to keep up with.
