Does anyone use a stand-up computer table?

Postby mikeschn » Sat Sep 26, 2015 6:35 pm

Just curious if anyone here uses a stand up desk for their computer?

I've been thinking about trying it... and since I had some really rough lumber in the shed for the past 17 years, I thought I would put it to use...

Here's my really rough standup table, made out of rough red oak...

Did I say it was rough? :R

Dry fitting it... testing it...

Any thoughts?

Sweeeeet build.

My back gets stiff after standing too long. Sitting too long puts a kink in my wife's back.

But anywho, it's a classic oak piece.

That's a nice design with the relative weights of wood. I like that you have
recovered some resource to beauty and active use.
:applause:
My son has moved to a similar desk at work. I warned that he would get tired.
He's used it for about 4 months now and says he loves it. He's in his early 40s...
He says that this encourages him to move around enough that It isn't a problem
for his legs nor his back.
I've been surprised by his reaction and am interested in how you find it after a
little while using this table.

I started using a stand up desk about six months ago and like it alot. The key is to stand for short periods of time at first and extend the standing time slowly. I also bought a Mojo seat (https://tinyurl.com/pz6wwvp) when I want to relax a bit at the desk. I still have to use a regular desk and chair when meeting with clients, but for a work desk I love to stand.

I almost always stand in preference to sitting...I just find it more comfortable.
I do however spend a de entry amount of time at night sprawled in my lazy boy though (as I am right now)
I guess it's what work you do or have done that makes your body the way it ends up.
Standings far better for you but if it isn't comfortable it's not much good.
BTW I love your desk.very nice

Don't know if you're in love with the cracks in the tabletop, but I have achieved an interesting effect in rustic wood by filling the cracks with a mixture of epoxy resin, colloidal silica (for strength), and wood flour (for color). Fill the cracks, allow to set, then resand, and you have a top suitable for writing as well as computing. Rather than buy wood flour, I retrieve it from the dust collector on my belt sander. When wood flour and resin are mixed, the color always comes out darker. Experiment with flour form different species to find one that suits your taste. Walnut dust will give you an almost black infill.

Rough is cool.

Watch you neck, though. That's a pretty steep downward viewing angle.

Mike, I see you have it already built but, have you thought of making it motorized so you could go from sitting to standing?
A few years ago Jane & I put together a manufactured one for her son and it's fantastic.
It even has a digital read out of the height and uses a paddle for the height adjustment.
It was a KD (knock down) unit and somewhat of a pain to put together, but well worth it.

Well, it's all poly'd and installed in the house!

Yea, it's hard to beat the price. The only thing I had to buy was the water based poly!

It's better with a full sized screen, which is also adjustable up and down!

I think if I were to do it again, I'd fill the cracks with the walnut paste/epoxy. It makes for a smoother surface. But where my arms are, is not too bad!

Give me a few months. I'll let you know.

All the difference in the world with an actual monitor. Nice job, Mike.

Mike I've never tried one. One my hip wouldn't like it and two where would Trudy's cat sit. He thinks he has to help me with my morning computer stuff lately. But that table looks really cool, good job.

My bride just got one.....electric, it raises to very tall heights, and lowers where you can sit on the floor. She loves it. She got hers from ikea at about half the price my corporate offices pay for theirs.

It won't carry as much weight, but 150 pounds is more than you should ever need....unless your going to give rides.

I'm contemplating getting one for myself Saturday.
