I'm back to work at my part-time job. Right now four days a week. Three days a week in a couple weeks. So, progress has been slow.

I've begun my hatch build. That will be slow going as I have a special challenge in that I built my bottom cabinets to very close to the bottom edge of the trailer floor and can't fit a 1 1/2" hatch frame there. You can see that in some photos a few posts ago. I am going to put the bottom 1 1/2" frame member about four inches from the bottom, then narrow the hatch to about 1" below that. I'm thinking some half-lap joints to keep the integrity of the verticals and the horizontal frame members intact. As I write this I can't really visualize it. Will take some photos as I go to see if anyone sees any problems looming.

Hello neighbor!

I'm just down the road from you a bit (near Peshtigo).

Haven't been on the forum for a while and I'm just getting caught up... That is one nice looking camper. As you can see, I'm partial to the cedar myself. Mine is 1/4" shiplap cedar covered in glass and epoxy.

As others have said, your gonna be giving lots of tours and answering lots of questions when you get that baby out on the road.

Good luck as you finish your build

That's beautiful Chuck. I sure like the looks of cedar. I just put spar varnish on mine. I'm hoping it lasts. Will probably make a cover tarp and maybe a travel cover for it later on.

Working on my hatch. It's a very tight fit. I think with some sanding, shaving and a little beveling it should slide real nice. We'll see after the glue sets and the skin gets installed. I bagged the half lap joint idea. Just pocket hole screws. With skinning both inside and out it should be plenty strong.

Bottom of hatch needs to be finished. As mentioned in previous post I need to narrow the frame to accommodate cabinets that are very close to the back.

Foamed and ready for skin...

1/8" lauan cut to size, straps in position and ready, couple tubes of PL Premium on hand, some 1x lumber available for seams. Hoping PL Premium doesn't stick to wax paper between 1x and skin. Taking a day off to think about whether I have all the wiring I need run through spars.

I thought making the hatch frame was going to be a challenge! Skinning it was my biggest struggle so far. With the sharp curves and the fact that brad nails are not a good choice for securing 1/8" lauan I have accomplished very little today. Skinned the hatch frame and now letting that glue dry thoroughly for 24 hrs. My goal today was to skin one complete layer today, Ha!

Image

I'll have to dress up the bottom edge of the hatch with some type of trim, maybe some stair nosing. I was hoping the lauan would be more cooperative. Update: I was able to remove enough PLP adhesive with a chisel and utility knife to do a better job of adhering the tighter curve there. I like how PLP is easy to cut/trim. I hope it is good at adhesion too! Skinning the hatch was much easier off the trailer and the results after trimming the excess skin on the edge is very nice.

And first skin on cabin...

I'm seeking advice on fixing my mess-up when I trimmed the hatch/wall edge. I was in a rush and didn't tape the wall side when I routed out a dado for weatherstrip. The result can can be seen in the above photo. On the wall side of that seam there is some awful tear-out of the 5/16" cedar. I can sand it down, but, I'll have some huge divots there.

In addition, I am undecided on how to do my PMF/canvas/paint transition on the roof/wall seam. I am intrigued by Mike's suggestion of routing a round over on the edge and running the PMF over and down the wall some. I can picture how that should look with maybe 1/2" to 1" of PMF over the side. I'm just not that confident I can keep it looking good. I will check out some of Mike's suggested foamie techniques for doing this before proceeding.

I think if you stain the newly cut wood to match the sides, it won't show all that much.

Yup, that won't be difficult as it is just spar varnish of various consistencies. I brush a little on one spot and it dried to where you couldn't see it from a distance.
