The best generator for what you need is the little Honda at 53-59db at low speed. Yamaha also makes one. It's plenty quiet & runs efficiently. They both run at 80-85db with a load, so take your pick. Ryobi makes one as well, but I don't know about it. It's less expensive than the Honda or Yamaha at $600 at Home Delay.

A small window AC unit is about where you will end up, but how it gets installed is always the issue. It can run on low, so just figure it's a trade off between noise & cool....

I went to an autox where the small two-cycle generator powering the equipment was loud. At least on the side away from the timing stand. Someone had taped together a foam box with an open side that faced away from people. I was impressed how much noise reduction a simple box gave that generator.

You will pay for a quite generator, it's not primarily about a muffler, it's knocking down the mechanical noise from within the unit as well.

Honda or Yamaha inverter generator. These will run forever given the recommended care.

Small window shaker A/C. Most are too big but they are about the best you can do.

I don't use a generator when camping and am usually not too pleased when my neighbour is. But I was surprised last summer by a guy with a Honda EU3000is. It was really quiet, especially as he had it lightly loaded. He had a really big 5th wheel trailer so weight was no concern.

If I was to buy a generator - the EU2000i would be my pick. It is only 30% more $ for double the engine size and peak power and could normally be run at a lower percentage of loading than the EU1000i with the same load. So the EU2000i would run quieter. A EU1000i would likely have a tough time starting even a 5000 btu a/c unit. I am not familiar with the Yamahas & they are likely worth a good look too.

MODEL EU3000is EU2000i EU1000i

http://www.electricgeneratordepot.com/ has the EU20001 on sale for $859 with free shipping. Not sure how long the price will last. I would order one now except I have a few other high dollar priority items on my list.

Harbor freight now sells a quiet generator, read up on it first, some stuff is good and some isn't there.

One of the problems with these offbeat brands is service or warranty work (parts).... I'm not knocking them, I'm just saying should the need arise, I think you are in for a long turn around repair time vs a common name brand.

Depends where you live. I have a HF store 15 min away. I can return the unit for a new one if they can't get me replacement parts.
I bought the HF 20 ton wood splitter and made sure the warranty was worth it. I've split 7 cords now and the splitter is impressive.
The predator engines are exact copies of Honda, if you need to replace a part just look it up and order at your nearest Honda dealer.

I wouldn't buy anything smaller than a 2kw. My 1Kw Yamaha generator will not run an A/C unit.

FWIW I did some research on the various inverter generators a few years back when I was looking at doing an off grid cabin

The ranks seemed to be

1. Honda
2. Yamaha
3. Hyuandai / Ryobi
4. Champion
5. Generac
6. Everything else

I did a ton of research, was all set to pull the trigger on either the Hyuandai or the Ryobi as the price/review point was good for me.

Then I got a 2 cycle harbor freight one from my dad as he got a good deal on em. That and a 50ft cord that puts it on the other side of the TV, and its good for me.

As far as noise bothering others, I only run a generator if I am off in the boonies somewhere, and only to either recharge the battery, or run a load that is too large for battery (heat or AC) and turn it off after I'm done with that load.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Like I do with my not so portable Champion 2000 which is not a light weight version. But I would like more quiet and portability.

And a few years ago the Generac was a IX2000 which did not have good reviews from what I can see. In July of this year, they introduced a new model, IQ2000, which looks promising. It is so new that it is not in all the retail locations yet. MSRP is $799.

That new IQ2000 does look pretty nice, I like the fuel gauge and load meter.

Definitly looks nicer than the old one.

Dont know if its $200 nicer than the Ryobi the Hyundai though...
