conversion of old records to mp3

Postby ae6black » Sat Jan 23, 2016 10:14 am

Considering many of the people on this foreum probably grew up with 33 record albums, I was wondering if anybody had any luck converting their old records to mp3 format. I bought a cheap china conversion unit to patch between my record player and the computer and although it records, I just can't get any volume out of it. I was wondering if anybody has used anything else and had any luck with it. Thought it would be nice on a rainy night to hear some of the old music I don't listen to that much anymore.

I have converted TV music to mp3's with some old software I had. This winter I am going to convert my LP's and 45's to mp3s. I have a traditional turntable that I have borrowed and will be ordering one of these converter systems from DAK.

This is an old link, but I am sure it is current. I will find out this weekend when I order it.

FYI

I am not too worried about the technology as the software is not that complex with other free models on the web and I already have a "black box" I used to use to convert TV programming to my HD.

Good luck.
Bob

I just ordered my system from DAK. I need to wait on the interface/mixer and then I will test it and post my results. There is a 30 day, 100% guarantee.

About 10 years ago I used a contraption, with a very long cord, between the record player and the computer.
It worked fine to convert my 45/33 1/3 rpm records that were not available in mp3 format.
Since then I've found it much easier, and better quality, to just pay Amazon mp3 downloader the buck, more or less, for the songs I want.
I still have about 300 1950's-1970's rock n' roll 45's and a pile of albums too that are tucked away for Archaeologists to find.

Wish I lived closer. I love those old songs. Maybe we could have made a deal.

Sorry, I'll never sell them.
I'm sure Amazon would have them in MP3.
My buddy and I would go to a used record store in San Diego where they would sell old juke box records for a buck a piece.
They were in like new condition.
Lots of fun memories.

I tried some conversions years ago. The biggest problem was the old records were too worn to make for pleasant listening.

For those who like old rock instrumentals check out this album
I bought it years ago and it even has Torquay on it.

1960
Do not remember the Fireballs, but do remember the song.

I knew you would never sell such a collection. Just joking.

I think I remember it.
Was just getting into beer parties then (you know, the ones the cops always raided and poured our kegs onto the ground). These songs bring back a lot of memories of my much simpler life.

Yes it can be done and done well There are various adapters and software as well as LP to MP3 record players that attach with USB to your computer.
MtnDon in some cases a stylus that sits deeper in the groove can be used on well loved vinyl.
I have found a good bit of old music on Youtube.

It just so happens I spent many, many hours during the past week converting every one of our CDs to high bitrate MP3. Next comes the vinyl conversions. You can easily find an old, but really fine turntable for almost nothing at thrift stores or yard sales. I got a wonderful B&O, with spare needles several years ago for $25 (it probably cost over $1k when new). I run it into my sound board and come out with just fantastic quality sound. Yes, it takes much longer to do an album than a CD, but the quality is higher and you get to listen to the music if you want. One of the best methods I've found to clean them is to go to a local eyeglass store and buy the "eye glass" spray used for polycarbonate lenses. Then use a microfiber rag. Initially use distilled water to do a first rinse.

If you are having trouble getting any volume for your recording, your computer's input volume may be turned down. I use Linux with the Maté desktop instead of Windows, so I can't give you specifics on how to change that. Look for a mixer or sound preferences or the control panel in your start menu (if you have one of those).
