Anyone DIY an add-a-room?

Postby skeetersmobilelodge » Wed Mar 23, 2016 4:57 pm

So I'm thinking of adding a side tent to the teardrop (4x8 frame). I was thinking of starting with an SUV tent. Something that would be big enough to stand up and change, maybe hold a card table, sleep a couple of extra bodies on cots, etc. Has anyone done anything like this before? I've done some searching and have come across a few posts, but nothing that has any in depth explanation as to how to attach to the body of the tear, keep air and water tight, etc. Any suggestions, tips, or the like would be greatly appreciated!

I did not build my tiny camper with a galley in mind. The tear hatch opens to cover a 3x4 standing area under the hatch. I hang curtains around the hatch to make a nice changing area.

I got a cheap SUV tent and really like it. I put it up if I want or need the space. Only takes 15 minutes unless the grandkids are helping. What I don't like is it doesn't fit as snug as a custom side tent would, or one meant to attach to a teardrop. But it keeps the bugs out and gives the grandkids a place to sleep and play

From the looks of it you have the SUV tent wrapped around the corner of the teardrop. Is that correct? How does it do with rain? From the looks of it you deal more with the frozen stuff than we do down south.

I have changing tents that hang off the side of the tear, over each door. I have seen a tear maker who offers an ez up with sidewalls. It has a hole in one side that velcro or snaps around one teardrop door, Making a 10x10 room to step out into.
It would be easy enough to make

I do wrap it over the tear, only problem with rain is it was a really cheap tent and it leaks around the windows in heavy rain. But it has lasted 4 years going on 5.
I do enjoy winter camping but don't use the tent. Here is a picture looking in the tent to the tear, I leave the teardrop door open when I use the tent108300 you can see it is quite roomy.

We have two Kelty Car tarps and a custom made rear tarp that is having modification made to the mosquito netting.
I have Kedar rail on three sides of the teardrop, all of the tarps are the same form wider in the middle but all are 6' wide at the tear which is 6X10.
The advantage is that We can use any of the tarps in any position, the ends can be dropped to shed wind.

 It seems that a lot of people use EZ-Up style canopies and then clip or tie tarps to the sides, as needed, in cold or wet weather.

One person that I think made hers was Debbie, aka Nevadatear. She also made matching side walls that get hooked/snapped(?) to her awning when needed. She even put a plastic picture window in hers. Can't find a picture of it but it's grand!

We have a fairly unique Teardrop.....Miss Piggy.
And we use both a 10'x10' Ezee up (Broadstone brand) and a 12"x12" (Coleman brand) as protection from rain and sun??
Last season I built a "Privacy Room" from a recycled/repurposed ezee up frame I found at the dump.
It is 4'x6' and stands (attached to MP via lower pull outs) under either of our ezee ups. It has a zipper entrance, and gives Sandi total privacy to open her door, get out, get changed, etc. etc.
There is room for a luggable loo, folding table, clothing hooks etc.
Very light weight, folds up and fits in a lawn chair bag, and sets up in under 5 minutes.
Cost was only the cost of the "rip stop nylon". out rigger ropes, zipper, and Velcro tabs.
Works Great!
Will down load pictures.....always a chore for me???
Good thing, or I would flood this forum with pictures if it was easy??

I used an awning rail and old fashioned rope and pole awning to create a covered space then added velcro with mosquito netting to create a bug-tent. I do intend to add interchangeable (or simultaneous use) rip stop nylon panels to the sides as well so the area can be converted to a privacy tent or weather-proof area.

Stacie, hard to see but is that open along the top? It looks really sharp with your trailer.

Not exactly sure this is what you mean... But no, there is no opening or gap along the top. The continuous length of mosquito netting is affixed along the entire edge of the canopy with velcro like this:

Image

The access in/out is through the netting to the left of the trailer's rear door. I left it longer than needed and overlapped it to create a curtain door that would keep bugs out. Will do the same with the opaque nylon when I make walls so it can be a privacy room. Along the rear of the trailer the netting has a hole cut out of it so that it also protects under the rear of the trailer to keep bugs from coming in from underneath the back of the trailer.

That's what I meant. Really looks perfect with your trailer.

I added a 4 ft extension to one of my campers. The extension was wood framed with coroplast sides.
