weight of a stripped out pop up?

Postby Aaron Coffee » Mon Aug 10, 2015 8:09 pm

Converted my first teardrop to haul soap box derby car. For nationals in Cleveland Ohio i borrowed brothers utility trailer and built a 4 foot wide by 8 foot long by 2 foot high box using 1/2 plywood floor, 1/4 ply wood for the walls and top using 2x2 studs. Worked pretty well and towed better than the tear. But now i find out that my neice will be coming up into soap box derby which means I will need the capacity to haul 2 cars, a car is approximaetly 6 foot long and 3 foot wide at the axles . Thinking if I find a popup camper and rip out all of the camp stuff, I would have capacity to haul 2 cars. Guess my big question is what is the weight of a stripped out pop up? I realize this could vary due to length, construction, etc. Looking probably something from the 70's.

Thanks
Aaron

I stripped a popup to just frame and added a 5/4 tongue and groove deck and sides. It was an Apache popup, my utility trailer was about 50" x 9' it weighted 400lbs.
Here's a pic of it loaded, I used and abused it. Knew I was pushing my luck with the frame getting bad. Sold it to my friend, thought he'd fix it then use it. He used it until he knew he was pushing his luck and spent time this winter rebuilding frame. But it sits unfinished.

went and looked at a 1969(from what I could tell searching online)Apache Mesa popup, some work needs done on lift sytem, $100. The big problem is no title and abandoned trailer. Going to check with the court house and see what options are available for title, otherwise I would have jumped on it tonight.

Save it, Apaches have stronger frames than most I've seen- I'm talking older trailers. Mine had a heavy duty axle and wide tires that really made a very stable trailer. Of the Apaches I stripped none had enough undamaged to be worth saving.

Could you just build a box, on top of the box? make a double decker, just a thought.

Update: Bought the Apache. found out you don't poke the floor towards the center to check for rot, check the corners. The corners of the floor are rotten. Stripped it down to the floor and going to replace the floor and rebuild the camper body around it. Am going to make a tailgate at the back.

Well I stripped the apache completely apart, and have a few questions. What type of plywood do I use for the replacement floor? I live in the middle of the country so anything with the word "marine" in the title is very difficult to find. I still have some epoxy so I plan on 3 coats of epoxy top bottom and sides. The body panels are all aluminum, what type of sealer do I use between the wood floor and the body panels and what type of sealer between the body panels? The sides panels have a flange that slips into an extruded channel then is held in by an extruded lock strip.

Thanks
Aaron

If any big box store lumber stores are near you they should be able to order what is carried in their other stores. Treated plywood is a choice but some people wouldn't use it in living space. Not sure about sealers, but if your looking for a good caulk-Lexel is what I like!

Thanks, I probably will go to a big box store for the convenience and I need to get some other plywood for another project. It's been a while since I've done much on the forum. I realize this isn't a teardrop or even a tiny travel trailer but would there be any interest in a build/rebuild/modification thread?
