Vintage Sheepherders "Wagon" (Camp)

Postby S. Heisley » Mon Jun 20, 2016 12:35 am

I thought you might enjoy these pictures.
I'm assuming that a Sheepherder's wagon is considered camping equipment; and, anyway, there is some vintage equipment inside, too.
Of course the mural on the outside is not vintage; but, it's nice.

Except for the mural, this one's a vintage model. The stove is an old fashioned wood-burner; and, during the summer, they probably cooked over an open fire, outside, as that wood-burner would have added heat to an already hot day. (But that stove would have been much appreciated in the winter!)

Having solar panels in the newer ones would be a very nice improvement!

It's a perfect, mobile, studio apartment! A tiny house on wheels before tiny houses were trendy.

I worked out of one of those for about a month back in the early '70s. We cooked over a Coleman stove if I recall.

You're a better man than I if you can back one of these.

Some are now buying or constructing those to use as "Guest" rooms on their property, not a permanent residence . I actually researched it a few years ago and by keeping it portable with no wheels, no permit was required, like storing an RV with an occasional overniter. Long story short....a large investment with eventual maintenance.

Nice rig. But I must correct the terminology, it is just something that bugs me, do not mean to be mean. I grew up around sheep men, sheep outfits and all. Around here they are called sheep camps. Never a wagon in the name. And you will never get me to ever use "wagon" in the name. :)

That said. The best lamb chops I have ever had was off a wood stove in a sheep camp. And that camp had a canvas top. Some time after that they started putting solid tops on them. Now the only place you see a canvas topped sheep camp is on a family trophy camp parked in the yard with flat tires. And now on the working wagons you see solar panels.

You know Randy, I think your'e right (again). Here's my old (and late) dog, Nick keeping an eye out for bridge clearance. We towed that camp over for some friends and they actually use it for a guest bedroom once in a while. Again, you're a better man than me if you can back one.

Neat picture, Tony. The thing that caught my eye was the Union Pacific flat bed car that had been converted into a bridge!

Those are rather commonly used for bridges here. Where they are trucked in from, I'm not sure since we don't have a nearby rail line. Their just narrow enough to keep you focused.

Are the sheep camps hard to back because they have four wheels?

The front wheels track like the front of your car.

I have only a little experience backing up those kind of trailers. Yes they are hard. A whole new ball game where the front wheels steer.

those are cool camps!!!

been wanting to build one for myself and even have a 4-wheeled frame ready for construction

as for backing one... PIECE-O-CAKE

put a hitch on the front of your vehicle and you can thread a needle with one
