Anyone with experience using this wire/cable?

Postby markeyro » Tue Jul 05, 2016 7:32 pm

Hi there,
I've spent some time looking, but thought this would be an easy one for folks more experienced than I to speak to.

Trying to source some 12g and 14g cable to use on the DC side of my cargo trailer so I'm ready to go when it gets here.

Anyone with experience using this:

No reason I could see that this wouldn't work, where appropriately sized for the circuit it's on right?

Thanks,
Mark

My only reservation on it is knowing which is the negative and which is the positive when you get it strung out. Is it clearly marked somehow? Other than that, it's fine.

I like this stuff that's red and black:

I agree with Tony on a red/black combo. There are other sellers that do 12 gauge as well. Another option, through amazon, is to search for this "Coleman Cable 095136208 12/2 Low Voltage Lighting Cable, 100-Feet " the Q@A section states that one side has writing so it is possible to keep straight on + or -.

There should be something to indicate polarity, otherwise do not use as you will be having to figure it out as you go along. I have seen some low voltage wire with a white stripe along one lead. Also have seen and have used speaker wire when they have one conductor copper colored and the other silver.

I used this on my last teardrop build and it's the best I've used so far, made in The U.S.A.

It comes in different gages and lengths to suit your needs.

Any 12/14/16 gauge wire may work.. As other mentioned, prime thing is it has some sort of polarity indicator so you are hooking things up with correct polarity.... Whether it is colored (black/red) or has a stripe or writing or rib on one side (conductor) it does not really matter (the voltage/current is color blind) as long as you are consistent in your wiring practice.. Designating one conduct as positive (one with indicator?) and staying with the concept through whole wiring process and you should be good...

Something to consider also is will wire be exposed or in conduit or duct, it may depend on wire type you get as to what way you intend to install it....

Being economy minded on your build is ok, but don't go to a point where you go to the dark side and get materials that though the are inexpensive that they cause you more problems then if you had just spent a dollar or two more and made life a lot easier for you...

Might also consider where you are sourcing your wire, if you are just looking local (big box store) you may not bet getting best all around product/deal... I personally would also look at places online that specifically deal in wiring products to see if you can get better product and better pricing......

Great points guys. Couldn't agree more on the whole skimping yourself into a piss poor product situation. Just don't want to unnecessarily over pay. That red-black 14/2 is the same stuff I've got on the way. Also ordered my pd4135. Hope to be able to hit the ground running when she gets here!
