Cashing in some coins - wow

Postby daveesl77 » Fri Jul 08, 2016 3:36 pm

We keep a couple of jars around to just throw our change into as we pass by. I guess it has been over a year, maybe two, since we dumped them. I decided to take them down to the grocery store to use the coin exchange machine. I honestly thought we might have $40 or so. $240 later it was like, WOW. That doesn't count the $20+ in quarters we took out of the pile to put in our camping tray, which probably holds another $60 now. I didn't think about the 11% cost the machine was charging, because I honestly did not think we had that much in change.

I talked Regina into letting me buy 5 MegaMoney tickets for the $540 million drawing. I don't play unless the jackpot is over $400 million and buying 5 tickets is a big splurge for us. :D

When I turned in over $400 in loose change before moving, I turned it into Amazon gift cards, because I now live in a small town and shop on Amazon a lot. And you'd be surprised how many camping and teardrop related items Amazon carries.

And there's no commission on gift cards, you get 100% of your money

I start a new jar every year and use the money for Christmas presents for my grandchildren. I don't accumulate as much as you did --- I'm a plastic kind of girl. But I usually get $50.00 to $75.00 per year. It helps!

I must have a fortune in the office water jug we have filled up. Been putting money in it for 25 years. Five gallons I believe.

That must weigh a ton. Check your floorboards.

Here in Australia we still have $1 & $2 coins. Every time I go to the shops I use my small change [5, 10, 20 & 50 cents pieces] to get some $1 & $2 coins. These go into any suitable container.

The first time [2006] I used a Lindt chocolate can...the biggest danger of which was possibly dropping it on my foot  When I cashed it in, after first purchasing a 4 burner gas BBQ, I banked $740.

I keep this practice up...a very good way to save for Christmas or special purchases...& regularly bank between $700 & $1000 per annum.

The biggest problem with this system is resisting the urge to use the saved coins during the year

many banks have these machines, and don't charge if the cash is deposited into an account
