I started with propane and switched back to white gas. Lasts longer, burns hotter and works great in cold weather and high altitude. I can get 2 weeks use out of one tank.

Propane Why, personal experience with the vapors from white gas . From a standing position to a sitting in a matter of a second and it made a lasting impression(Many years ago). I had been camping with white gas for years as a youngster with family and probably developed a casual attitude. In my adult life I was surrounded by safety rules and reg's and have developed a cautious nature and the dislike for white gas . Still many campers use it every day without a problem. Just my personal choice.

I grew up with the assigned chores of filling up––and pumping––the white gas stove and lanterns every morning... No more.

I'll stick with Propane. I refill the one pound bottles and they last a couple of days.

I like white gas because I have had trouble getting any heat out of propane at higher elevations.

Plus they are just way boffo cooler in a gear head sort of way. :D

Maybe I can't vote because I haven't used white gas...?

I was pretty fed up with my old Coleman propane stove and it's lack of heat output. Bought an Everest and like it. So much so I've put the cast iron away and just stick with cooking on it with non-stick stuff, as well as a small Weber propane grill.

Here we are last summer at 7300' in the White Cloud mountains and didn't have a problem with our Primus propane stove.

I think our Yellowjacket trip was right at 8,000', again no problem making coffee (dinner was in the Dutch ovens).

KC: What stove have you had problems with and what was the elevation?

My Camp Chef Everest works great for me at my favorite 7200 ft elevation campground.

Compass Rose has a three burner propane Stainless Steel Suburban cook top but when we were tenting it was a 70+ year old Preway three burner white gas.

Due to the risks involved with liquid fuels I also prefer propane. I have a refillable 5lb tank an always keep 3 or 4 1lb tanks as backup.

I camp with grand kids and simply can't tolerate the risk of fuel in a screw top container. When I was 20 something I used white gas and unleaded gasoline in the pump up coleman stove. Now I prefer the sealed propane bottles.

I do NOT refill 1lb disposable tanks but then again I don' t use many. I refill the 5 lb tank at a regular refill station.

We use a Coleman 2 burner and a Coleman grill but we also cook over the fire sometimes. Hot dogs...... Pie irons...... The kids love it.

Ohhh yeah... I must admit we usually have AC available. So an electric kettle and cheap toaster makes qick work of coffee an d toast for breakfast. Camping should be easy , safe and fun.

Tony, I have to admit that it is an older model, a Primus 4400 Streamliner II, but then again, my white gas Colemans are old, too.

When we were at Poet Creek I couldn't get a medium sized pot to boil, just 5078 ft; ended up using coals from the camp fire. Maybe it was cold (morning/evening) at the time?

I'm not saying I'm opposed to propane. It is convenient and clean, and I'm sure technology has improved. I'm just saying, if I had to choose between them, and between the stoves that I currently own, I'd go with white gas.

There's nothing like hot camp coffee, that's for dang sure!

I'd go with white gas.

Just out of curiosity, for those of you that take extra white gas on a trip, where do you store it?

Coleman fuel comes in gallon cans and quart plastic bottles. I bought on quart plastic bottle that I store in my tongue box. All the dirty stuff goes in there . Tools ,Cjarcoal in a 5 Gallon bucket, wheel chocks Etc. Rarely do I need the extra bottle while on the road.

I've got a Coleman propane camp stove that's served me well for years. Can boil water, fry up veggies, and make hamburgers or steak on it.

I've used both. Dad had a gas Coleman, so I followed. Din't like carrying the gallon of liquid spare fuel, and the plastic bottles hadn't been invented yet. Gas stove was fussy. Now I've got a TD and a 20# propane bottle & Camp Chef Everest, a Camp Chef propane oven and a propane Little Red Campfire. TD takes care of the lantern issue. Life is good. All that good heat, and no spilling smelly fuel all over my hands. :frightened: Downside is that propane isn't a particularly good cleaning fluid.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.
