Grumman 2 Trailer Balance

Postby DWT77 » Wed Aug 17, 2016 7:29 pm

I have read through various threads and checked out the balance spreadsheet but just wanted to get some verification. I am planning on building a 5x5x10 Grumman 2 teardrop. The plans have the body of the trailer at 106" but my overall length will be 120". From what I have read and entered into the spreadsheet pretty much the 40/60 rule is the way to go.

My question is since the trailer body is 106" but the teardrop extends to 120" do I calculate any of the 14" difference into the balance of the trailer since that weight will still be there or do I strictly just worry about the trailer body?

For example

106" at 40% is 42.4" to the center of the wheel

120" at 40% is 48" to the center of the wheel

Thanks in advance for any input

When I did my trailer balance. I included 1/2 of my body overhang on the front in the Body length, (so my body extends 10 " over front frame so I included 5" 10' + 5" = 125").

I included my tongue box in my Hitch center from rear (2' tongue box + 4' tongue sticking out in front of tongue box = 6' . Since my tongue box curved back to the frame under the overhand I use 120" + 24" + 48" = 192"

I estimated my weights in tongue box, galley and interior shelf and used the dimension to the center of these areas plus estimated weight in the extra weight section.

When all said and done after I loaded my teardrop the tongue weight came very close the the spreadsheet.

Dan, do you find the 192" is to long for the Jeep? I will be towing with a Jeep as well.
