The Disco!

Postby dirtsailor2003 » Tue Aug 16, 2016 3:04 pm

So this is one of my main pieces of iron that I cook on. I use it weekly when at home, and sometimes exclusively when camping. It is a plow disc off of a harrow. A friend welded the hub hole closed for me and added the handles. I took it to my local powder coat shop and had them sand blast it to remove the slag and rust. Once I got it back I seasoned it like I do all of my cast iron with flax seed oil. 3 initial coats. All other seasoning has been from cooking. I wasn't happy with any of the stock burners or turkey fryers so I built my own burner out of a steel tire rim. ONce igot it complete I took it to the powder coat shop and they blasted it then coated it with high temp black powder coat. Enough talk here's a few photos of this hunk of steel and a few recent cooks. Oh yeah almost forgot, the disc weighs in at 39# and the burner is right there too! My galley for my build will be designed around this.

Here's this disc pre-blast and season

That is a cool set up. I really like your burner. I have three high pressure burners and none of them are exceptional performers. They are ok just not like an industrial version should be (That is why I have three, been looking for the one). The concave griddle or shallow wok idea is also a good one. Thanks for sharing.

Here's the needle valve I use on the burner. I also use it on my propane smokers. I thought I had the burner info in a photo too but I don't. It's also made by Bayou. The needle valve may solve your problem without replacing the burner.

Another thing to check is make sure there aren't spiders living in your burner. They clog it all up.

That looks great .
Here's picture of our 24" disc given to us by a great guy ...
We also have a kettle corn maker he made from a propane tank, and use a turkey fryer burner for both.

Perfect. I have a similar one that I need a burner for and I really like your setup. Need to find me an old rim and get after it.

This rig works great. I have a set of shorter legs too, Dominican set it up on a table or lower to the ground if I want.

I have no problems maintaining any temp I need even in windy or windy and wet weather.
