We live in central Florida, and while not near the coast, we are expecting some decent winds due to the oncoming hurricane Matthew. I've been through a few before, actually did my first solo transatlantic crossing about 2 weeks ahead of David back in the 1970s. Actually, I was about 2 weeks ahead when I left the Canaries and got into Ft. Lauderdale about 3 days before it sort-of hit. As I looked at Conch Fritter over the last few days, and having gone through storms in other types of camping contraptions, I realized that these little beauties we have created or purchased are probably the toughest emergency type shelter you could have at your home. Think about it...most are curved, most have been way over built, most are darned near waterproof. While they are light, they can be easily anchored. They are fully equipped and many can go a number of days without any hookups. I expect a large tree limb would crush it if it were hit right down the middle of the roof, but not so sure the damage would be so great if hit from the side.
And so, while we doubt anything will happen to the house, Conch Fritter has her batteries charged and water and propane tank filled. Hmmm, maybe by Saturday we could actually get over to Flagler Beach and get a spot, which is almost impossible to do. After all, the coast has been evacuated.
