Invertor Question

Postby gudmund » Wed Dec 21, 2016 2:46 pm

I have NO understanding of electricity except for - keeping my fingers away from them spark plug wires when the vehicle is running (along with never taking a coat hanger and shaping it into a plug-in and putting it into a electrical outlet again = a burnt thumb I hide from my Dad forever and him wondering why the fuse into the "fuse"box burned up - 8 years old 1962 at the time)

I have small single plug-in invertor - 150 watt continuous/300 watt peak power I got at the local NAPA auto parts store awhile back along with a Black&Decker blender rated at 1.3 Amps which when I did the math 1.3 amps = a 156 watts continuous draw per the chart I found on a invertor website thus leaving enough peak power capacity for surges?. Question: what would be the possibility of running this with a 18 volt Ryobi 4 amp battery instead of the 12 volt car battery hook up?? I know car batteries are rated at 12 volts but can very in voltage up to 14 volts (or more) which makes me wonder if this would be possible. I use the Ryobi 18 volt stuff being they have a 'on the road in-car charger' along with all of the other items I can take camping, radio - lantern - fan - vacuum - impact wrench - air inflator etc. etc. etc.
When camping with the teardrop group, we use the blender for making margrireta's but have a problem when there is no power available. I am hoping this would work when in a pinch - yes, we could use the vehicle battery but if the Ryobi battery would work, this would just make it more versatile by not having to be so close to the vehicle when it's "margrireta time"  :wine:  .

And don't be surprised if it doesn't work at all. The best inverters are ~80% efficient, so your 150W inverter may end up producing only 120W without overheating.

Your Ryobi battery is rated at 4A at 18V. That's only 72W. It isn't going to produce enough watts to begin with, even if your inverter could handle the load.

Sorry

You will be drawing 14.35 Amps, my bet is you will release magic smoke from your battery if not having flames.

Chas - so are you saying I should wait until Shasta to try it? that way you will be parked next to me so you can put the fire (I have the extinguisher) ??? But than again - we should have enough ice on hand to cool it off instead!! Ted (gudmund)

Ted, let's not and just say we did.

Your inverter will run a 60AH trailer battery down to 50% in 5 hours. You might get away with running a blender or margarita maker for a few minutes at a time for an afternoon, if you aren't using any other loads.

I had an electrical fire in my teardrop a few years ago, it took forever to get the stink out of the trailer. You don't want that

Get a bigger inverted and run it right off the cars battery with the engine running. Or to the same with the inverter you have. Most have a overload breaker or fuse.

Doesn't Ryobi make a "job site 18 volt blender" for breaks?

No Ryobi does NOT but I did send in the suggestion to them along with the other one - telling them they need to research making their system more compatible with our needs when camping - like a battery powered blender or a 18v Ryobi battery powered ceiling fan for the trailer (the fan they make already make will operate over 10 hours on a charge, and yes I am working on adapting one into my overhead Fantastic vent and no my trailer does not have a battery system)

Chas, we'll let Brian test it out being he is the "margrireta man", if he wants to try it. So is it being said here? that being the blender will not be used for long intervals? maybe this will work?? The longest it will be run for is 3 to 5 minutes at a time with a few short surges and yes the invertor I have here has a 15 amp fuse in it's power cord.

Ted, read the wattage plate on the blender. How many watts does it take?

Then we'll figure out if you can run the Binford 4000 off battery/inverter power ;-)

Have a Merry Christmas Ted,

Chas: the only thing it says is 1.3 amps for power usage and "Made in USA" (it is a older one that I bought around 1990 new) You have a Merry Christmas also and take care into the New Year :wine:

Watts/Amps 120VAC are not the same Watts/Amps at 12VDC https://www.batterystuff.com/kb/tools/ac-to-dc-amperage-conversion-run-through-an-inverter.html
I would also go with bigger inverter off of TV battery.

Watts are the same no matter the volts or the amps. Watts = volts x amps.

However when inverting from low DC voltage (like 12 vdc) to high AC voltage (120 vac) there are losses in the inverter. So more DC watts into the inverter than the number of AC watts out. As much as 25% more.
