Teardrop Covers

Postby Old Rookie » Wed Apr 27, 2016 9:02 pm

Looking for feedback on covers. Have ordered our TD and planning on keeping it in the shop but I want a good cover. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Check out the largest SUV covers, maybe at Walmart.
I use an old cover for a long gone 85 Chevy Blazer.

As I was building my teardrop, I realized I didn't have an indoor place to store it while I was working on it.
SO...
I went to harbor Freight and got a big poly tarp (a silver one) and draped it over that. Then I realized my trailer wasn't much more than a shaped box, and I know how to wrap a Christmas present so I started forming it to fit the trailer.
I then thought I could trim off the excess, so with my trusty Harbor Freight scissors, (hey, they came free with the purchase of the tarp..) and a roll of duct tape, I made a cover that fits like a glove!
I replaced the cheap duct tape with good gorilla tape, reinforcing the corner points.

I'm sure you could do about the same thing. it might last all of 2 or 3 seasons, but once you've made the first one, it's easy.

and if it works, it's NOT stupid.

Sounds like you made a nice cover.
I wonder about condensation since a tarp doesn't breathe like manufactured covers.
In the past others made a wood box frame to sit on the roof under the cover for air circulation.
That might be a consideration in your case.

You could always build some spacers for between the td and tarp. That would allow air to circulate.

My next step is to convert some cartop rails for the TD. eventually I want to be able to carry a canoe/kayak, so that should hold it 'loose'. but by then I'll need to make a new one so....

Costco usually has 3 different sizes of car covers and I have found the small one that fits my GEO Metro also fits my 4x8 tear with a bit of room to spare(would probably fit a 5x8 also) a lot of times, when leaving on the teardrop trip - I just lift it off the tear and cover the Metro when leaving (Suzuki Swift -great CHEAP driver, on #7 now-retired, paid for and 44+mpg and have gotten 300thou out of the last 4/5 of them each-they just DON"T jump trees very well in wind storms - #2 died a early death 'pole-vaulting' a tree that fell in front of me at 50+mph!! :o walked away from it with a chipped tooth after going airborne for 57feet in the air!! )

I know this is an old thread. But figured I would add my two cents for those still searching covers. After writing the below post, I noticed that someone was thinking about the same covers. This should give some insight into the product in actual use.

I have one of these (http://a.co/0rZChxp-The Up to 8' size) for my typically shaped 5x8 teardrop (the sides fit one a 4x8 sheet of plywood, for reference). Its just snug on mine on height. It could use a 1-inch hem along the bottom and it would be a perfect fit. It was close enough that I didn't want to return it. If I needed to replace I will likely go one size up. I have to store mine tear outside on a semi-shaded lot and after a year and a typical Virginia winter, it still looks like new. It even held up nice through some high wind situations. No complaints at all.

Happy camping.
Some day I will figure out something to put here. But for now....
