What do you do with your shoes?

Postby Cosmo » Sun Nov 05, 2017 1:06 pm

I am most concerned with keeping my shoes from bringing dirt into the trailer and keeping them dry.
Plastic shoe box stored outside has been working out but requires yoga practice to be flexible enough to perform the moves for removing my shoes and putting them in the box while in the trailer with the box outside (especially if I had a glass of Pouilly-Fuisse).

I was warned in Cape Breton that foxes would steal my shoes if I left then unattended outside.
In Iceland I was told Dwarfs would steal them. Here in the USA I have been told Raccoon's would run off with my sneakers etc.
Any other options available?

Thanks in advance

We keep our camp shoes (crocs) just outside on our doormats, poised at the ready to slip into for the 2:00 am call of nature. So far we haven't had fox, raccoon, or dwarf issues, but now I'm worried! The plastic box approach seems sensible, but I'm not sure I would think so at 2:00...

You mean you made a shelf under the trailer with the fender?
That gave me an idea I tried to jam my shoe between the fender and tire where it would be protected - but not quite enough room for some of my shoes.
Thanks

I stick mine in a plastic grocery sack and set them inside on a shelf.

Yes, the shelf is exactly what I did and is under the door for easy access. I have one on each side.

We leave ours in the side tent attached to the trailer.

I don't want my stinky shoes inside! So they're upside down on roof.

Camp shoes, AKA Croc Flops, stay outside on the fenders. Adventure footware live in the car.

Ah, one of the many nice things about having a slightly larger camper (5.5x5.5x10) and a platform bed. Under the bed, when traveling, we store the galley. When stopped, we have a 5'x5'x1.5' storage area. Much of this is taken up by the built in drawers and side storage, but the central 2.5'x5'x1.5' is all open. Here we put the cat box, store the porta-potty, the dog uses it for lounging and we have a huge, safe storage area for stuff, like shoes. Since the back of the trailer opens, we store our perishable food stuff inside, but have almost instant access to it. Mind you, this is all when the galley is removed and set up. However, even if the galley is inside, we still have a large 2' x5' floor area that isn't under the bed and the bed doesn't get cruddy.

I have seen smaller trailers where the builder installed a drawer underneath the cabin and you can sit in the doorway and place your shoes inside for the night. Build it as simple or fancy as you like. Here is an example. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=41216 Its the second posting on the page

I have been camping since I was 5 years old. I always put my shoes underneath the fly of the tent right in front of the door, even when 2 weeks into the park interior. My shoes have been soaked, burned, rotted, and lost in mud holes - but never have they been stolen by a wild animal. I doubt any sane animal would ever get anywhere near those stinky things. As long as you don't intend to use them as food bowls, I think you're pretty much safe from theft unless they're made from natural leather, maybe.

Also - always bring a spare set of good boots.. you never know when you might end up stuck up to your armpits in a mud hole :)

I have a pair of crocs that go on the fender ( or in a bucket that I put under the trailer if its wet out). My hiking shoes are usually in the TV.

We put metal baskets that act as a drawer under each door for shoes. They are stowed in the cabin when traveling. :D

We use wire baskets that are used to slide onto pantry shelves. I mounted two pieces of 1/2 inch PVC pipe for them to slide into. When travelling the baskets hold items on the bed. At night we slide in our shoes. They are under the trailer and off the ground.
