Turned away

Postby Midget » Tue May 02, 2017 8:20 pm

Heading home from the Shasta Gathering we stopped into Chico Ca. So we could break up the trip home and also visit the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. We booked a night at the Almond Tree RV Park in Chico through the Good Sam Club website. Upon arriving at the park, I was checking in and the lady asked if we were "self contained ". I said, sort of as we had a teardrop trailer. They asked if we had a bathroom and after she got up and looked out the window, she said we couldn't stay claiming the owner didn't allow anyone who was not self contained even though they had a restroom with showers. We went to the brewery for lunch and decided to drive the 3 hours home.

I gave a review on the Good Sam website. Anyone ever had this happen to you?

I've heard of it happening in snooty campgrounds. I don't visit those because they are usually glorified parking lots...no, thanks.
However, if I am asked if my camper is self contained, I say "Yes". After all, it has a bed, cooking facilities, contained water, and a porta-potty, all within the trailer. What more does one need for an over-night stay?! Even the big rig folks barbecue outside sometimes. :Flippin Burger:

A few years ago, we had a benroy teardrop pulled by a 30 Ford sport coupe and wanted to stay in Las Vegas RV park. They wouldn't let us in till they inspected our rig. They wanted to make sure we werent trailer trash. We did look a little funny parked between all the high dollar RVs but the people liked us!

1972 I was camping in a '72 Mazda Pickup with cap. Tiny rig, bed only. Pulled into Las Vegas and 'camped' between the big rigs at a large casino parking lot. Only asphalt, a crappy campground. They just wanted money, no questions. I don't gamble and I didn't want to move my beast to take in the sights so I went to the bus stop. Nobody there but one girl, she smiled. We both waited. After 5 minutes, she said '25'. I replied 'No, 21.' and immediately realized she was not guessing my age. No, I did not. I got on the bus. I was 21.

That's not a campground, it's a parking lot for a Winery. $44 per year. One night only, no facilities of any kind. No hookups.

The kind of place where the generators run all the time.

No thanks!

I know that the Silver Strand Beach in San Diego is only self contained RVs cuz we got turned away, a portipotty was no good. Guess they thought people would dump them in the ocean.... Of course the stupid part of that is the beach has been closed for a total of 170 days this year due to sewage run off from Mexico.

I think there are other beach campgrounds like that.

Ditto, I'd rather stay in a Walmart than that place. Besides, they probably have a better wine selection at the Walmart.

No it's nothing practical, just pure classist "we keep out the riff-raff" attitude.

This happens at a lot of places that share public beaches. In New Hampshire we went to a campground on the beach and they said the state made them close their bathrooms at night, so all the RV's had to have a self contained toilet. The owner asks the state every year to sign a variance to allow them to keep the bathrooms open to no avail.
