I was going to put mine at the top too but after my first outing I opted to place it at the bottom. I found that I will most likely travel with them in the down position unless I have my motorcycle. When I came back all the stuff we had under the bunks had slid and moved. So the thought is this will keep said stuff under the bunks better. No issues with my heels hitting the brace.
As for the legs traveling to far out it’s a moot point they can tip past the full upright position but only by 1/4”-1/2”.. as they hit the 2x cross piece at the top. Even with out the brace on the legs traveling over 10 miles of washboard the legs didn’t move.
