Framed out the doors today. It is 1" aluminum angle. My goal was to have a flat surface for the weatherstrip to touch when closed as well as having an equal amount of aluminum reveal around the door. Whoever cut the hole for the back door must have been drinking. I had to shim it a little to get it square. I think I wasn't measuring as precise when I began.

It wasn't drinking or not measuring precise, it was this Texas humidity, does funny things to wood when no ones around..
Those doors should be rigid enough to stay straight and with good weather seals, not leak.. Wish I could find a couple reasonable..

Hi David,

It looks like the opening is 35.5" wide and 39" tall. If you can find one it's not a bad way to go. Heavier than a commercial aluminum door and only works on the street side are the cons. This is my first time so it makes the process easier for my skill level. I'm better with the mechanicals than the construction. But I'm pushing hard to wrap this up for a fall trip.

Tomorrow I'm sanding the outside and the doors.

The Little Spark is coming right along.. with doing the PMF, you're getting another milestone wrapped up.
Did you use titebond or paint with the canvas? Trying to figure out what most use , and what works the best for them..

I put Titebond III full strength on the plywood first. Then a tight weave duck canvas. The next layer will be paint. I watched YouTube and read a lot of stuff on the internet. Many folks use many methods with great success.

I debated glue over the canvas but decided I'd rather have the paint soak in the cloth.

It went really well, and better than I expected since I was doing this alone. Much easier than hanging wall paper which I despise.

Checked the canvas this morning and good news: it's not laying in the floor and no bubbles.

Mark, Thanks for sharing your posts and pictures.. they're a big help..
when you get it all PMF'd take more pictures and let me know.. I'll order the 10 oz from bigduckcanvas, have it delivered to you, bring the tear up there for you to do it..

After re-reading the forum posts on here and watching all the videos I could for the last couple days. The PMF is the way I'm going to go for the top of ours.. Whew!! finally a decision...

Approximately how much glue did it take to do the one side?
Did you have to use an iron for any wrinkles, or did it lay without any?
I have a heavy duty laminate roller, that should help out..

Staryder, IIRC the canvass behaves just like fiberglass when applying

we have gone to SQUEEGIES for laying FG along w/ subsequent coats of resin

the flexible yellow ones from the auto body shop suppliers

when using TB lll having a plain water spritzer would be handy for smoothing wrinkles

For the whole project I have used 1.5 gallons of glue. If you are only doing the top you should be ok with one gallon. I purchased 72" width canvas and it came on a roll. I didn't iron at all. It laid out smooth as glass. I used a 4" plastic putty knife on the roof. I just poured the glue out and smeared it around in an organized manner. The sides were done with a dollar paintbrush and leveled with the putty knife.

I would be glad to help with your roof. Really. I don't know what I'm doing but I hold the flashlight very well.

Looks really smooth, Doing a great job on it. on the flashlight.. sometimes that's the best thing..
Going to try to work some tear time in today. Going stir crazy, with this nerve problem. Want the skins on, so I can push on with getting this campable. I believe the top will be easy enough, just take my time with it..
I have no grass, have only mowed twice this year..

Nice find on the DJ5, you did a great job cleaning it up Mark..
My dad had one back in the 70's when I was a kid. He ended up trading it for a 1951 Willys Panel, which I learned to drive in..
Sure wish I had one or both of those now..

Not much to update. Primed then painted the first coat today. I'm not sure at this point how many coats of paint I'll use.

It's still an update, it's smooth looking.. What paint are you using? Water or oil base?
Like the way the canvas went on for you and clamlamp (another PMF camper build I watched). So today I ordered a 72" wide by 15 yd roll of Duck Canvas so I'll have no seams on the top,.
