WATCH your N/T Tires!!!!

Postby Minics04 » Sat Oct 06, 2018 9:46 am

Please watch your Northern Tool Trailer tires!

I have 850 Miles on mine. Both outside shoulders look like new. I was under my camper yesterday and noticed BOTH inside shoulders have splits in them!!

Anyone have recommendations on quality replacement tires? For now I will be sticking with the stock 12" rims.

Be Safe out there!!!

M, you mentioned the number of miles on the tires but neglected to tell us the age and pressure you typically run

trailer tires(commonly marked w/ "ST" in the size stamp) have a 5 year maximum life expectancy

going past 5 is not to our advantage any more

there is a DATE STAMP on most tires today which is 4 numbers in an oval(usually) ring

here is a better pic(not a dirty old tire

using the date stamp in the 1st pic you can see that tire was made in July(30th week) of 2007('07)

check the age of your tires and when they hit their 5th birthday replace them

aso ALWAYS run MAX RECOMMENDED PRESSURE which shoud be in the 60psi range for the tire you showed us

runnung max pressure makes the tires run cooler

either issue and most certainly both together could be your culprit

HOWSUMEVER in this day n age the products on the market don't measure up with the quality i grew up with

YOU ARE RIGHT

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR TIRES(TRAILER & VEHICLE

I almost wrote the same.
The age has really bad effect on the tires! Perfectly stored, but very old tires are extremely dangerous, because they could fail even run at proper inflation pressure.

EDIT
checking the pics again I saw the DOT is 5015, which means the tires were produced in week 50 of 2015. These tires shouldn't be too old at this time. And considering the mileage, they should be still good.
This means failure of the tires. I would assume the quality is low already at production level (cheap material + cheap manufacturer).

My suggestion is don't go cheap for the replacement. Go only for a premium brand because tires are your contact with the road and even if you have the best vehicle or best breaks, if you tires fail you lose the grip with the road.
I won't suggest a brand (I work for one), but I would like to just say: don't buy Chinese! Seriously, don't try to save going for Chinese brands, go for either US or European brands.

You are correct, 50 of 2015. I purchased the trailer in 9/2016 to start my build. Did not tow until 6/2017.

I always run the tires at the correct pressure. Even when the trailer is not in use, I keep the tires at pressure.

I agree with your statements about cheap materials and poor quality. I figured I would have to replace the tires when I bought the trailer knowing that they were cheap to begin with. That's why I have kept a close eye on these tires. Just a little surprised they went so few miles and that it was the inside shoulder and not the outside shoulder which gets more sun exposure. I feel good about getting them off and getting some quality tires.

Thinking of going with Carlisle tires which I have on my boat trailer and have had good results with. Any other tire recommendations for the 5.30 x 12 rims?

Also, interesting side note about pressures. The Northern Tool instruction manual states 60 psi but the tire sidewall is marked 80 psi. I have run them at 60 psi.

dont run trailer tires at max pressure unless needed. Tire pressure based on load. Ya they are cheap tires but they last longer when you dont have the tire pressures maxed out all the time.

I replaced the tires on my NT trailer with Kenda radial tires. They are a big improvement and improve how the trailer rides. I bought the tires mounted to wheels from ETrailer.

Update: My tires are under a recall and being replaced free of charge.

Pls check if your tires are part of this recall at Achieve Tires (INNOVA tire supplier).
